• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Idle gear bearing mount question

GaryM

Husqvarna
AA Class
I am looking at a couple of bikes maybe to add.

Curious do all 83s cases have a Idle gear bearing mount as standard. I found a XC 250
that did not. It will be a the idle mount installed with two bolts threaded into the case.

Also all these cases have additional vertical support ribs formed in the case.

Surprised to find an 83 without this.

Not sure when they started putting those bolts and associated flange on but I would have thought later than 1983. I can examine what I have and tell you the numbers on the cases without and let you look them up. I don't see a part number or picture for it, it does come with a new set of cases but there is a part number, NLA for the rear swingarm pivot insert that comes with the case. You do have a point though I see that shaft,no flange, in the picture on the 1982 sheet. That case in the picture has the mono shock sized swingarm pivot dosn't it?

Yes it is the bigger hole. This is another sample pic I had. I used a set of new NOS cases for one of my 430s

I will detail when I get it done. Almost done.

Put a sleeve in this bigger hole between pivot axle and case insert - hope it does not vibrate

Well went ahead and committed to buy the two 83s Coming in a couple weeks - we will see if it has the idle gear bearing mount on the bigger 500. Yes what the heck how many more Huskies do I need. They were un finished rebuilds - just have to finish them.

Please note that all the cases have the two bolt hole mounts - un tapped in early 80s cases

Hopefully your sleeve goes full length from one side to the other. It isn't unusual on the dual shock ones to see indentation from the wristpin like thing the needle bearings for the swingarm ride on. There is a little sheet metal washer thing but it can't be expected to distribute any load.

Those inserts in both 12 and 14 mm would be nice to have reproduced Quite a few cases are in need of having some installed with some sort of epoxy like substance others need weld repair first. Those later cases do seem to have a bit more webbing around that spot. New cases with fresh clutch actuating bore, bore for bearing with ring around it and bearing pocket at sprocket can't be beat.

Added later;
I have identified two engine cases with the earlier intermediate shaft. These are prior to having a raised spot for the numbers. One is readable the other is smooth coating. The readable one one came off ebay origionally called a 390 then a 430 so that is amusing. The other one came from a silver frame 430. I wrote down 2087 which corresponds to 81,82,83 430 at least the way I found it on line somewhere. I have a silver framed 500 the one with the 44 mm carb must be an 82 or 82.5 and it has the bolts. I wrote down 2289 but was kind of guessing. I have an 1983 xc500 that has the bolts and wrote down 2094 which should be on an 82cr500 as well by the same source. If the numbering and the features change together you could have the later version on the 82 500 and the earlier version on the 83 430.
