  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

I remember why I like 4 strokes

Had a great ride today on the 310. My mate was on a KTM 300 smoker. We swapped bikes for a ride. We do mainly tight ST stuff. I thought the smoker went very well, a bit soft off the bottom but a pretty wide spread of power none the less. I certainly feels nimble and light. The first big climb was a lot of fun and the smoker did an excellent job. Then the descent. It was steep, gnarly, rocky and slippery clay. Guess what, NO engine breaking. I knew there and then I wanted my 310 back pronto. To be fair my mate was keen to get is steed back too. I know I could happily ride one any time but heck I love 4 bangers down hill.

I can't hardly believe that the KTM300 was "soft" off the bottom. Those bikes are known to have lots of torque. Maybe your friend had a particular powervalve spring installed and tuned for his riding style. As for engine breaking, on a four stroke, if I can't be on the gas on a downhill, I often have to have the clutch pulled in to avoid the engine braking effect. I guess that I have ridden two strokes for too long.

Engine braking was one of my biggest obstacle when I got my 510. It was very hard to get use to. Now I count on it. But DD's right on step down hills I gotta hold the clutch in or I lose control of the back end from sliding.

Interesting isn't it, we all have particular likes and nuances regarding bikes. Yes DD, I was a little surprised at the soft bottom on the 300. It is as from the factory and only has 1000 miles. I found that I had to use a bit more wrist action to keep it stirred up. When I got to about one third throttle I would stomp hard. But there was a noticable lack of torque off the bottom. It felt slightly more agile than the 310 with regards to directional change. Not too sure on the lack of linkage either, I think they are prone to kick out a bit.
I find going down steep hills in second gear with just the occassional tap front and rear keeps the bike rolling well without getting out of hand.
