  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

I put my stock silencer back on

Sooo, when I ordered my bike, 2013 Te 511, I had the dealer install an FMF powercore 4. After reading all the exhaust threads I figured it would really help out and with the quiet insert should not be too loud. Well, as the thread title states, I could not take the sound so today after about 400 miles with the powercore, I put the stock silencer back on. Even with ear plugs the thing made my ears ring. I do have tinnitus so maybe that is part of it.

Today, I rode the bike about 35 miles mix of road and trail with the stock pipe. To be honest I did not feel any big loss of power. I am running in race map 2. Actually, the bike seemed to run better, smoother. I was having a minor problem with flame outs but none today with the stock silencer.

I know that many have changed their silencers, but it did no work out for me. I am much happier with stock.

I only post this as food for thought in case anyone else is on the fence about replacing their stock silencer.

I will be posting the pipe for sale.

I liked the sound of my stock exhaust. Had kind of a Ferrari thing going on. Different. But the FMF is a lot lighter and I feel like it does add a bit more power (loud is fast, right?). Even with the [EDIT: meant to say quiet core] power core, though, it is louder than I had hoped. Don't notice it in the woods that much. But on the rare occasions that I tool around town, I notice the echo off of the foothills. Might as well uncork your stocker and go with that, should be pretty nice.

You can decat your stock exhaust, it doesn't make it any louder, but there is a considerable power difference. Map 2 is a horrible gutless map, consider installing Map#3. With map 3, flame outs are a thing of the past. We can flash map 3 for $40, or your local dealer should be able to.

I had the dealer install map #2 and my bike runs beautifully. I also removed the cat plug, emissions canister and intake trumpet (which i will re install after opening it up), what difference would i notice with map #3?

If you think your bike might be loud, have someone else ride it and listen. Totally differnt perspective vs being on the bike.

I never realized how obnoxious my Leo Vince system was on my 07smr till I let someone take it out on track. I thought 'man, who's making all of that racket out there', then I realized it was my bike.

Note that this was a road course track day; full of race pipes. Ended up repaking the pipe with the quiet insert, but it didn't help. This was the older style with the short, single muffler.

Can anyone testify about the noise level of the Q series pipe from FMF vs stock? My stock pipe is in pieces, so I need a replacement.

Are you talking about a 511? Your profile says you have a TE310r...

My bike ran really good with Map2. I had Zipty / Tinken do the Map3 upgrade, runs noticeably better. I cant imagine a better mod for $40. I run the Barret exhaust on mine, pretty quiet, has a great sound, no one ever says it is loud.

('13 511) Personally, I'm rather disappointed with the FMF and quiet core. I'm keeping it for now, but I'm frequently thinking about how I can quite this bike down. Longer neck on the quiet core? Other mod? Swap it out for something else and call it an expensive lesson?

Never heard of Barrett, just checked out their website. Looks like a nicely made product. How was the sound vs. the stock single pipe? Do they offer inserts as well?

I used to have a VFR with a Staintune system from Australia, also very well made.

I think one of the tough parts of noise control with these bikes is the motor. Lots of racket goes on down there, and not much can be done about it.

I have the FMF Power Core + Quiet Core Insert. It's is loud but not open pipe Harley loud. Putting around in the woods with my stock exhaust, I hardly ever noticed the noise. With the FMF I can hear my own echo sometimes. If they made a Q series for the TE I would probably do that. I think the FMF Power Core is the only option unless you are willing to drop $1100 on the Akrapovic. Or you are willing to drop extra $s to do the FMF Factory 4.1 + TC header and all that. I think that rings up to the $600 range, but is supposedly more powerful, don't know about noise level, though. It looks like Motosportz made the right choice $450-ish isn't so bad. I didn't realize Barret had one for the TE 511 when I got my FMF.

I would consider my bike on the quiet side but nice sound. Zero complaints from anyone including me. Rode with a buddy with a YZF450 yesterday, his bike was borderline loud, my muffler is about 4 inches longer than his. He commented how nice mine sounded and how it was not offensive at all. I really like it. I modded this on to the bike (Welding it) and it was not purpose built for his machine.

Just checked their site: http://www.barrettexhausts.com.au/husky-shop.html TE/SMR 511 is listed as an option. How much did you pay for shipping from AUS?

At the time they did not have one for this bike. I was a Barret dealer at one time. Still have a few random mufflers around here if anyone wants to weld one to the stock mid pipe. The reason I did not continue with them is not FS approved spark arrestor.

Not sure if they will make a 449/511 pipe but rumor is ZipTy is working on some exhaust products.
I went to an Evo 1 silencer and have a prototype resonator being made. I don't like the Akro head pipes. I would never run the 12lb stock exhaust, instead I would have an insert made for a lighter silencer, longer and smaller in diameter.

I looked around for anyway to make the powercore quiet. I bought the quietest insert FMF makes for it but still no luck. I really wanted to keep it but finally gave up after my last ride. My riding buddy told me it was not too bad but I felt it was too loud. I could definitely hear it echo off buildings when I ride around town. So far I am very happy with the stock silencer. I even like the way it sounds!

Of course you gotta have what you like, but I did want to let you know that my TXC310R with full FMF system and with the FMF enduro spec dB-S/A plug in easily passes AMA Enduro sound check regulation of under 96dB at the bike specific rpm data sheet. Mine came in in the low 90s at the Gorman qualifier.
