  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Hyde Skidplate on a 449/511

Sorry, I wasn't trying to start a thread war. I'm kind of like rainman sometimes, so I can write things that don't match the thought behind it.

No worries - I actually was writing directly to your post. We're cool.

I actually called Hyde a few more times and got them on the phone - Jay which I assume is the owner. "Oh, are you the guy that sent me the email with pictures?"
You mean the email from yesterday where I specifically asked you if you had a better fitting skid plate and could you please call or email me as soon as possible - yeah - as luck would have it that WAS me...

He went on to say that he put a call into the factory (which is odd - I thought he made them???) but it would be Monday before he hears anything. "This is the first I have heard of this. I guess Husky changed things up again."

So I reminded him that this wasn't the first time he had heard of it. He didn't know what I meant and that my 2013 was clearly a new design...

So I anxiously await Monday. I'll put $20 down that Monday will come and go with no phone call from Hyde.

Husky has used the same plastic skid plate on the 449/511 from 2011 to 2014. Hyde is just making excuses. I believe the parts are made in south africa so they are definitely not made here in the US.

Well to put drama to an end, I gave up on Hyde. Absolute zero interest in solving the problem. I called again to find out if he had any update and he couldn't recall what the issue was - not really sure what to think about that. His solution was to return it. Oh, returning it means a refund of the original purchase cost only, not shipping either direction, plus a 30% restocking fee. Classy! So to try a Hyde out (that doesnt fit) costs one about $60-65 even if you rerun it unused.

I would up using my soldering gun and using the base to burn a bolt-sized hole over about 4mm on each side to make up for the 8mm error. The allen bolts that Hyde ships have far too much height. It they actually fit, they would sit safely recessed into the skidplate. However, since the recess cannot be used do to improper manufacture, they not are extremely exposed and are clearly going to make contact with everything the skidplate touches.

I ran to our local fastener store and bought the beefiest looking allen buttons in grade 8. This at least minimizes the ability for a rock to rip the bolt loose.

Bottom line? Total fail Hyde.

Hyde has been told multiple times that they have a clear design problem yet continue to sell a new product that will not bolt up for the application intended. As soon as I find a product that protects the clutch and mag covers Ill take this off and throw it in the garbage where it belongs. Lesson learned.
