  • Hi everyone,

    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Husqvarna SM 510 too much for a beginner?

Do you have any friends that will let you ride their bikes?

I'd still get the 510, you dont have to use all of its power 100% of the time ;)

Unfortunately none of my friends have super moto. I talked to a guy that owned them both and he said that they were to demanding for him, so he bought a BMW.

When I asked him if 450 is easier to handle than 510 he said that both are very demanding.

Honestly, I would prefer the one that feels lighter and easier to handle, the one that wheelies less, and the one that allows to use one gear longer (not the one that requires very often to change gears).
So which one would that be, 450 or 510?
 
There really isnt much to differentiate between the 2 bikes. I was under the impression they both weighed the same, the 510 just has a longer stroke. The 510 with its extra torque will require lesss gear changes.

You are in tough position mate, for the extra €300 I'd get the 510. You can grow into the 510 but if you get the 450 you might always kick yourself for not getting the 510.

This is also what I was thinking, that 510 having more torque, will require less gear change, but will require more attention not to wheelie on first two gears.
I tried the R6 and it didn't rise the front wheel when I didn't wanted to.

I am afraid that 510 being light, will wheelie when I won't want to.

I think they will take the decision for me. If they accept 3700-3800 for the 450 I'll get it. If not, I'll get the 510.

DErZ, do you think it's not a good choice for the city and track? I will use it in the city only on weekends and short distances, when the traffic is lighter.

You tried both 450 and 510 and the only difference was the 510's longer stroke? It will take a long time to regret that I didn't got the 510 I think, but if it's better for the long term, yes, I should get the 510.
 
How much track time are you going to do? what sort of tracks are they? (go kart tracks/sumo specific or motorbike tracks?) what sort of journey is it to work? Motorway, city, local B roads?

Are you going to have just 1 bike? will this be used for work and track time?

I won't use the bike on highway, only city, but because the traffic is very heavy during the week, I won't risk riding the bike on longer rides. I live in Bucharest and the drivers are not that carefull with the motorcycle riders, nor all the roads are perfect.

So I will use it for rides around the neighborhood and some go kart track, and I will use it more often in the weekend when the city traffic is clear.
 
Are you handy with a spanner? both bikes are going to need oil changes every 300-500 miles and then filters every other service.

If you are going to live on the go kart track then depending on its size then the 450 will be alot of fun but if its only once in a while then Id get the 510. The 510 will also get you out of trouble quicker from the crazy Bucharest car drivers ;)

I wouldnt be worried about the bike wheeling, if you are uber cak handed in 1st then mebe you'll flip it but after a couple of hours in the saddle you will realise that your doubts were unfounded.

Yes, I will use it more in the city than on kart track, so I guess your advice is logic :)
Here the drivers are not used to respect the motorcycle drivers, so at least in the first year I will stay out of traffic.
I also lived in Spain where everybody had a scutter.

That's why the bike will be for fun, and I'll use the car more.

So now you really made this choice difficult :lol:
 
I will wait this weekend, and if they won't give me an answer, I'll get the SMR510 for 4000€.
I hope that is in a good shape after sitting 7 years in the showroom.

Unless you're the new genius of bike riding the World is waiting, a 510 will obviously be well beyond your abilities.

I'd rather suggest to buy not even a 250, but a 125 for a first motorcycle, and change for a bigger one only when you master it to its full extent (which can take you years).

I gave them a call and they accept 3800€.

Here says that 450 has a bigger fuel tank 9.2L than 510 7.2L, that 450 has a carburettor fuel system and 510 injection...this sounds wrong.

Also, the dimensions:

Length: SMR450 - 2190 mm; SMR510 - 2207 mm
Width: SMR450 - 840 mm; SMR510 - 820 mm
Trail: SMR450 - 97 mm; SMR510 - 83 mm
Ground clearance: SMR450 - 270 mm; SMR510 - 245 mm

I thought that SMR450 is smaller and lighter than SMR510. Which one is lighter and slimmer after all?

To those are same bikes, only different is that engine cylinder, head, maybe carb is bigger on 510.....Both are carb bikes, that 450cc is maybe 1-3kg maybe a lighter, more revly engine.
Gas tank size i´am not sure, i guess those are the same.

So the specs from that site were way off. I chose the 450 knowing that is lighter, but on that site was heavier, wider and had bigger ground clearance.

yes those spec sites are not reliable in some time.
But if bikes are the same, only different is that that cc, fuel system...Hmmm, it can already be concluded that the that 450cc is lighter that 501cc bike, I'm sorry that you did not know that 450cc is lighter than a 501cc bike.

Here is those bikes some differents also
The SM 450 R and SM 510 R models are genuine replicas of the world Motard championship winning machines ridden by the official Husqvarna team. The two engines that differ only in strokes of 60.7 and 67.8 mm respectively now have larger sized valves.

Nice bike to find. I don't think you'll have trouble riding it, just don't open the throttle all the way and take it easy at first. Good luck.
