  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Hi here is my next restoration project, i thought id put it up on here as any ideas/suggestions or info will be greatly received. Ive owned the bike 9months now & have brought it with me from the UK to New Zealand where im living & working for a bit.The bike is at current totally stripped down awaiting frame & swing arm to be powder coated. The engine is also in bits awaiting vapour blasting then will be rebuilt. Im going to paint the tank in the colours of my old 430 (maroon) with buffed ally inset "Does anyone know of anywhere i can get this done in NZ"?? Id also like to not use the white side panels & run with a rear mudguard with number boards built in. "where do you get one of these"? any further advice tips welcomed cheers Barry

Barry,
I don't how rare they are in the UK or NZ , but it the USA there's are very rare, i was lucky enough to find a 85 510. I've only seen a handful in the past 3 years since i've restored mine. DC plastic (USA) sells Husky stock style side panels.

Thanks john theres afew about in the UK i dont know about NZ ive only been here 7months i have my suspicions though!! cheers michael for the picture

I guy i know brought a "1 owner, church on sundays" 510 xc from the usa about 10 years ago, i must look him up and see what happened to it. it was immaculate. it was for sale at the time and another mate who owned and raced a 510 in 1984 was keen to buy it. but 2 kids and unhappy wife stymied that plan. At the time they were an outstanding bike c/w the xr 500 except it was hard to start. took a real technique. Having mastered it, I can start any 4 stroke now.

Yeap starting a 510 takes a real technique, but like Suprize said if you can start a 510 you can start anything LOL.

cheers michael some good pictures there. just finished pulling the motor apart & have found a couple of damaged gears i dont know weither to try & source the 2 gears or change to a 4 speed TC gear set? the bike will only b e used for motocross
Hi Barry. Good to know you are on with your 510 project! Some pics of mine on my site under 'news' section. Rode mine in France at a big twinshock event - Great fun. Regards starting - don't forget that when they are hot they go Rich. A modern hot start device lets air into the intake to weaken the mixture. This is usually the main issue. You missed a great event in Devon 9UK) recently at the Little Silver Venue. Some BIG jumps though....
Farleigh Castle Vintage MX des Nations in a few weeks. Looking forward to that. Best Regards Barry, Andy Elliott.

sorry to hi-jack your thread but i have a question and i'm hoping one of you guys can help . will an 83/84 te510 ignition work on an 86 te 510. the 83/84 has ign. pickup on cases and the 86 has pickup on cover. Michel seems to know these models very well. any help would be greatly appreciated. i dont have the two bikes in front of me to compare. thanks

For me 83 ignition is standard.
84 is like 86 LC ( pickup on cover).

Michel, thanks for the quick reply. will 83 ignition work on 86 air cooled is my question. my 86 ignition is bad(broken magnets and pickup) and i have a good 83 ignition.

84-86 have an external stator.
83 have internal stator.
The 83 flywheel doesn't go on 84/86.
About ignition only, I don't know. Try, and check with parts lists #.

Hi Andy glad to here your still having fun riding the old husky!! im a long way off firing her up yet i only just finished pulling the motor down last week only to find 2 gears buggered, so to replace the gears or go down the route of a 90's 5speed or the TC 4 speed if i can find one?? any suggestions/answers? since ive been gone the twinshock scene has grown 10 fold ive mikssed so many good events oh well all the best andy cheers barry

I would just replace the 2 worn gears. If you get a different gear set, you will probably end up replacing gears in these too. Mine will holeshot MX starts with the 6 speed box and it gives you more versatility than the 4 speed if you decide to go trail riding or do the odd Enduro. It is all a bit of a personal preference really...
Andy

Hi steve, nice job i can still see it as mine though!! No looks good nice pipe too is it a Doma? Yes weve settled in pretty well its a good experience. All the best @ VMXDN keep me posted as to how she goes cheers barry

Yes it is a Doma, got it from Andy....I've also got a new tank for her, but the tap theread is stripped, so need to fix that.

I've had the shocks re-built and done by my mate Perry Leask who's dad was the UK Husky importer from the early 60's till the mid 80's

I've also had race tech springs put in the forks to stiffen them up for my lardy arse. Mr Thorpe knackered the gearbox (wore it out) at Farleigh last year so I have replaced a lot of that, but basically she's still the same as when you had it.

Really looking forward to Farleigh to riding her again.

Cheers,

Steve

Barry, as a matter of interest, is your 83TX fitted with the 36mm squirter Dellorto? Good luck with the resto, theyre special machines. I do believe two from SA found their way to NZ the best part of 20yrs ago.
Have a couple of these Husky 4Ts, and the Honda XR was a little red lazy donkey in comparison.
