  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

OK guys, had a bit of a "T" fitting mishap which led to premature clutch failure, left me fresh out of coolant and sputtering, smoking my way back to the truck with my tail tucked between my legs... Being the preventative-maintenance kind of guy that I am, I decided that I should really have a looky-loo and get the low-down on the real-poo. Aside from scorching my oil (and without having split the case), it doesn't appear that any real damage was done except for the piston and some scoring on the cylinder:

Have a few questions for the collective CH brain trust. I've been doing a bit of poking around reading various threads about compression ratio and thicker head gaskets vs. shaving the piston, upgrading the water pump, etc... (By the way, that Foolproof Cam Timing thread is brilliant!). Curious, since I've got my bitch torn-down, what if any reasonable upgrades I should make before slapping her back together.

I know I need a new piston, head gasket, etc... Not sure whether I can salvage the cylinder (really doesn't look / feel that bad - hand hone??)

Any and all feed-back would be great and appreciated!

One caveat - like most the economy has put a dent in my 'fun money' reserves. My number one priority is to get up and running, but if I can make any reasonable upgrades in the process I will. Not interested in wasting $$ on gismos or bling!

Muchas gracias todos!!

Chad

Thanks guys - any thoughts on which piston to get, or should I go factory?

How about the double base gasket with 1.2mm head gasket to smooth out the hit?

So far I've liked what I've read on the subjects...

I melted a piston in a yZ426 once. Took it to a local motor builder and he diamond honed the melted aluminum off the cylinder in about 25 seconds.
New piston, rings and back off to the races.

Enjoying the post on TT. A riders rule.

T fitting, ouch. That has been left in there 4 years to many. ('08?) You can get an affordable UpTite Y or the 2010 one piece rad hose for the rebuild. Im not an expert, but I would try and clean up and resuse that cylinder.

Great. Now I'm paranoid to ride! Bike has less than 1000 miles so tell me I'm most likely fine for next weekend.

benwiggin2 ... I have seen brass T's at hardware stores, Lowes, Home Depot etc. Get a brass T and 3 stainless steel hose clamps and you will be fine untill/if you replace it with a Y or 2010 hose, silicone one piece hose etc. Do get rid of that plastic/nylon T before you ride next! Don't forget to upgrade the rad crossover hose that goes through the upper frame. Replace with fuel injection line and hose clamps. Cheap necessary insurance.

If you haven't seen this before. Read the tips here: http://www.dirtbikemagazine.com/ME2...0&tier=3&nid=FE11D727959B4C2AA7906490B9DED4BD

what is the inside diameter of the hoses or od for the t? Gonna pick one up in the meantime for the up tite y fitting. Thanks in advance.

3/4" id on the rad hoses at the T. So a 3/4" brass T is the ticket. Make sure to set the clamps on the T or Y so as they will not rub a hole in your fuel tank or anything else.

When I blew a hose, I measured the old hose, it was 5/8" ID, I got a 5/8" heater hose at the auto store and it's been on a few thousand miles now. Is the T a different size from the motor fittings, or does the older bike use larger hose?

I just checked my oem T in the parts tub from my 2008 TE. It is 3/4" od. I notice there is reduction in the lower hoses, but this T is 3/4".

When the fuel tank is off, sheilding the clutch line with some fuel/vacume line wouldn't hurt.

I may have a useable piston for an X-light. I have a new set of rad hoses. I reused the head gasket on mine with some coppercoat with no ill effects....but yours overheated so maybe not a good idea for you.

Got some clutch stuff too.

Let me know.

Not worried about the jug, should be easy to clean up...

What fails on the T fitting? Does it just break in half? I have one on my 08.

Damn thing melts... Apparently (according to the Scott Summers write up) the T fitting and cross-over do not like high temps, which seems odd for radiator hoses...

Sorry to hear of the melt down. How many miles did you ride back to the truck to have that kind of wear?

Around 25 or so. Shitty thing is I had no idea I was out of juice! I knew I was overheating, but couldn't see the melted T-fitting under my tank. It wasn't losing fluid from the fitting either (at least not that I could see), it was steaming from the radiator cap. I also still have plenty of fluid in the overflow

Not sure what the X-lite is??? Is it compatible to an 08 TE450??

what were the usage stats to date on your bike? Hours, miles? Just curious and also hoping things get sorted for you! Sounds like you do have some leads being generated, that's good!
