• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Husky color codes for rear shock spring rate - Ohlins single shock models

everfree

Husqvarna
Pro Class
Posting for reference.
Mid to late 80's Swedish-made Huskys used an Ohlins single shock.
I found some color codes for the rear Ohlins single shock while going through the '87 parts manual. From page 13 of the 1987 Husqvarna Parts Manual - All Models.

Since I own a few of these bikes, I always wondered what color codes = what spring rates?

These Ohlins color codes, using 3 small paint brush marks, are painted on top of the Ohlins spring. I'm not sure if Ohlins used these codes for all model years, but I know they are on the 87 and 88 models.

If anyone can fill in the gaps or verify, let me know and I will edit this post.
Thanks to rwgregory for adding some missing color codes.
Dave

purple black purple = 43 Nmm (4.3 Nm) spring rate
purple blue purple = 45 Nmm (4.5 Nm) spring rate
purple red purple = 47 Nmm (4.7 Nm) spring rate
purple white purple = 49 Nmm (4.9 Nm) spring rate
purple purple purple = 50 Nmm (5.0 Nm) spring rate
black purple black = 51 Nmm (5.1 Nm) spring rate
black black black = 53 Nmm (5.3 Nm) spring rate
black blue black = 54 Nmm (5.4 Nm) spring rate
black red black = 56 Nmm (5.6 Nm) spring rate
black white black = 58 Nmm (5.8 Nm) spring rate
blue purple blue = 61 Nmm (6.1 Nm) spring rate
blue red blue = 62 Nmm (6.2 Nm) spring rate
blue black blue = 63 Nmm (6.3 Nm) spring rate
blue blue blue = 65 Nmm (6.5 Nm) spring rate
blue white blue = 69 Nmm (6.9 Nm) spring rate
Red blue-blue red = 73 Nmm (7.3 Nm) spring rate

Those color codes are actually directly from Ohlins and are not Husqvarna markings. Today Ohlins prints the actual numbers on their springs to take the guess work out of spring rates. I actually prefer the color codes myself...

Thanks for clarifying. I didn't realize Ohlins was doing the codes. Makes sense as there are no other marking on the springs.
Yes, my new Ohlins do have the rates printed on them.

I have the following spring colors:
blue black blue
blue red blue
Could you guy help me please ?
Thanks

Hmm. Good question.
If they are the yellow Ohlins springs, only two thoughts...
1) the blue color is really purple so they are 43 Nmm and 47 Nmm per the manual or
2) the springs rates are stiffer than 51 Nmm.
I don't know the color chart above 51 Nmm.

Thanks alot!!!
Every day more news from you guys !!!
The Cafe is really the best place to talk about Swedish iron.....:applause::thumbsup:.....

Thanks, doing what we can to keep the Swedes running.
We're getting there, but we're still missing the colors between 5.1 Nm and 6.1 Nm.
Maybe somebody will let us know.

I am guessing that tomorrow I will call italian Ohlins importer ( Andreani Group ) where I remind now I have a couple of friends.
I am sure they know the colors between 5.1 Nm and 6.1 Nm.
I will let you know asap, of course.

everfree,
Here are the remaining codes that I have:

Black-black-black=5.3
Black-blue-black=5.4
Blue-blue-blue=6.5
Blue-white-blue=6.9
Red/blue-blue/red=7.3
That should help to fill in some of your blanks.

Cool. Thanks.
Wow. I'm surprised the spring rates go that high. Who rides a spring that stiff?
I've added your codes to my original post and I guessed at a few codes as well.

Nice work Dave.
WE need to get this saved someplace so it can be referenced..

I bought two late 86 510 titled as 87's. One has yellow painted spring and the other has orange painted spring. The orange seems softer. What are the color rates for these colors. Thanks
Marc

My 87 CR has a blue spring...I don't remember the paint marks on it... I'm at work now. So who knows what color came stock on what model?
