• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

How many miles on TE610 before rebuild?

jellyrug

Husqvarna
AA Class
My TE has 3,850 on the odo now, use AGIP10/W60 bike has not missed a beat. I do oil analysis though with each change and it does not look very good.

Last oil change at 3,826 miles, 1,238 miles on the oil.

Parts per million:

Iron = 55 (This is about 30 times more than what my Harley shows:eek: )
Aluminum = 30 (Universal averages for a dual sport is 24 at 3,000 mile change interval)
Copper = 104 (Averages for dual sport bikes is around 26 at 3,000 miles on oil)
Silicon = 15 (Just did the TAT, a lot of dust riding with other folks. Average should be 9)
Fuel dilution = 1.5% not very good. All my other bikes will be below 0.5% for much higher mileage.
Viscosity cST@100C = 13.55, means the oil sheared down to a SAE 30 grade.

We don't know how much of the iron comes from the gearbox and the clutch spring inserts, most of the copper is probably the clutch bushings. I get close to 65 miles to a gallon, so the fuel dilution is hard to understand.

I don't think this motor will last very long, how many miles on your Husky's without a rebuild?

got 8000 on mine and the past 4k have been hard miles for her! running better than ever and oil still looks good (although i don't analyse it) but i change it every 1000 miles. use 10-60 too and have never had anything scary on the sump plug. until you get that, or something big and nasty in the left side bag filter, i wouldn't worry about it. heard of these motors going to 15-20,000 easy, just need regular oil changes and sensible maintenance :)

i do hope i haven't just jinxed my bike :o

Thx, from the oil numbers, I would guess around 30,000 will be time for doing rebuilding. Will be interesting to know if anyone got that much mileage and the experience.

Usually what I hear is that people get between 20-30k before a major reuild. Probably expect to do a timing chain and soome clutch replacements at least once during that time. Good choice on using tthe factory recomended oil.

30k sounds good to me. With no more 610/30's in production we are going to start finding out just how far these beasts can go...

I just had my timing chain replaced at 6000 miles, and did valve clearances and a full service, tires etc ($1500 - yikes!). This is early to change the timing chain but I'm heading afar, and my buddies 610 chain went afu at around 9000. I don't want that in the wilds. The new chain made a huge difference, its like riding a new bike, smoother as I roll on or off, and quieter sounding (i didn't say quiet).

Mechanics I've spoken with said besides this one major weakness (addressed in the 630) the 610 is remarkably trouble free, for something sounding like a chainsaw.

Just checked my 08 and it has 19,089 miles on the speedo. Run Super-Tech 20w50. Changed the spark plug around 15,000 cause I felt bad about not doing anything to it. Cam chain still at 7 clicks. Consumeables? Yes, lots. Motor? No. Checked the valves 3 or 4 times I think. I just run the crap out of it. Have run a couple of Hare Scrambles on it. Back in May put 1200 miles on it in 3 days on a trip to the mountains. I found out it will run upside down (multiple times, seems to like landing on the handle bars with wheels up) at the Fuzzy Beaver Rally in South Carolina. Have used and abused the bike and it hasn't let me down yet. If the bike makes it to 30K I'll be happy.

I use Amsoil 10w40 moto oil. Tests fine. Did a cam chain at 19k. Adjust the valves when they make noise. Other than that, the engine's never been apart that I know of. It had 54xx miles on it when I got it two years ago. This pic was a few weeks ago, I ride a bare minimum of 250 miles a week, that's just my commute. I reckon I'll treat it to a top end, clutch, and freshening up when it hits 50k, prolly next winter.

Yes I know my service icon is lit up. It has been since I bought it. I don't care about it being on enough to be bothered to go through the mode button/passing light shenanigans to cancel it.

Wow, great post that gives a totally different perspective. Thanks!!!

Or you can have my luck and have coolant entering the oil stream, and do a 2000$ rebuild after 10.000km. Keep an eye on the oil and don't let it run for more than 1500km... Especially on the older models.

Do you know what caused this issue? How was the coolant able to mix with the oil? Head gasket leak?
