    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

How do you figure the mileage on a supermoto bike?

I have found a Husqvarna SM 570 R I are looking to purchase. The owner claims that it has only been used for 40 hours, but it's 9 years old and had 5 owners... It has no hourcounter and mileage in the computer has disappeared. So I do not really trust in what he says.

So how do I calculate out how many hours/miles it has been used? Not an exact number but an good estimate.

When I bought my 8 year old KTM Adventure it had only 5000km in the clock and the brake calipers had the color mark left on the screw (original brake pad was still there) so then I know he was telling the truth. Could I fined something like that on this Husqvarna maybe?

It has new tires. How far can you drive on a SM-tiers if you drive on street?
 
Personally, I don´t think you can do much, unless you´re prepared to strip the bike. I just wouldn´t trust personal statements and I´d give it a miss.

+ 1 on organ donors advice. Better off giving it a miss, might be more trouble than its worth.
 
Just figure it is 9 years old and will need maintenance and repairs accordingly. Unless the current owner has maintenance records, or you can pick it up on a lowball offer, I'd pass. If you really like it, I suppose a sale pending a favorable assessment by a trusted mechanic would be acceptable.
 
I'm going to email the guy and ask if there is any records of engine repairs and things like that.
But even so I have thought allot about it and I think I will pass this one.

It is frustrating not being able to find a nice Husqvarna SM 450/510/570 R bike. And it is even more frustrating not knowing if I want to sell my Husqvarna WR 125, but that is a another story :oldman:

40 hours is about 2800km (if you average 70km/h)

Personally I don't know, there is a lot of wear on the engine casing at the gear changer. But I have sen more were on bikes that as only gone about 6000km as supermotos so it is hard to tell.
 
It isn't street legal, correct? This is like buying any used dirt bike. You need to decide what it's worth to you. If it needs repairs it could be thousands or relatively cheap. It's been up for a little bit and I'm sure he'd come down on price at this point. All you can do is ask
 
Yes it is street legal. If I were to buy a used dirt bike whit unknown milage I would not pay as much as he wants for it.

It is hard, the season is almost over and I want a motard but I don't want to do something stupid. It is hard to find a nice motard when it has to be a Husqvarna and within driving distains.

But I guess i can be reasonable and boring and wait for the right one to come along.
 
Its pretty much the way it goes with offroad bikes and "real" supermotos. Hours rather than miles. The true test would be running the engine and listening for valve noises, bottom end clunks, how smooth does it shift, are there any leaks, does it looks like the top end has been off (bolts/nuts with marring from tools)...any oil residue on the forks or shock-after you ride it. He may be slick and clean the stuff off prior to you arriving.

Have him start it cold and look for blue smoke, hard starting etc, and then if you can run it, see how it "hot starts" after getting it up to operating tempurature. Even if you have to ask him to go ride it around if he's not comfortable with you riding it.
Difficult hot starts usually indicate exhaust valves out of spec or too tight.

In my experience with used bikes, I look at the overall maintenance of the vehicle. If they dont keep the clutch cable lubed, chain tensioned and lubed, brake pads within wear specs, etc, then they most likely did not do anything to the motor. I am not experienced with the 570 motor but what I have been told by a friend who owns a Husky dealership is that anything 4 stroke from Husky AFTER 2006 is pretty solid. I have heard of bottom end bearings going out on the 450s and 510s before the top ends let loose.

New update in the super moto drama!

I'm thinking about to go and check on SM570R and maybe give it a really low offer so you have money left over to go through the engine in the winter.

At the same time I have found a newer 510 with 1500 km on the clock. But it is much more expensive. If I buy it I don´t have so much money left if something unexpected happens.

So buy 570 and use the money that I still have to check the engine in the winter or buy 510 and hope that it will hold together? I am not sure what to do. (Well after you read this tread you may know that :) )
 
The 510 is worth looking into. People here have a ton of knowledge on those since we have them in the US. May be easier to find parts for too.
 
The drama continues...
I have test driven the 570. It has done more than 40h. It was worn...
The shifter had made a crack in the engine chasing and it was fixed whit chemical metal.
The plastic was scratched and it had dust in the air box!

I talk to the owner of the SM510 is a converted TE510 so it has the 17 inch wheels but it only has the small brake caliper and small disk from the TE510. If I am going to spend a lot of money I want the real deal .

So maybe I going to give the 570 a really really low offer and fix it up over the winter.
Ore I will wait another 2 week and see if the 510 is still for sale and then give him a low offer so I have some money left to buy a big brake kit for the bike.

Anyhow it feels nice to have sorted this things, it feels like I have a plan.

If I am lucky there will show up another bike not far from me :)
