• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Honda cr480 ignition retrofit

mik430cr

Husqvarna
C Class
I know this May offend some hard core husky types but motoplat is Spanish crap. Has anyone tried to retrofit a complete honda cr480 ignition onto a husky cr430.?

Why? It is 2014. There are digital ignitions now. Basically find something you think is close and make a taper adapter I suppose. How involved do you want to get make a new crank end with taper, put the case half on the milling machine.

The mini 6 has been pretty reliable for me. It does make a pretty feeble spark compared to my kawasaki flat head four storke single on the air compressor. Much appreciated over points when they came out.

Probably the side of the engine that the electrics are on would effect the choice of a donor bike for hotter spark or other benefit.

How about a used ignition if your motorplasty went south?

Years ago I installed a electronic box called "roost boost" on a Honda cr 125 I built. It increased the spark at the higher rpm. I think they offered it for the huskys too at onetime. I haven't seen them in a few years.

I fitted an Electrex system on my 84 CR250 - Much more reliable starting now and not even expensive. Pretty sure they do a kit for the CR430.

I would not muck around with motoplats any more.......

i too have had good luck with them but they are getting old..i would go electrex if i was purchasing new. when i do have a spark problem i will probably just get my plat rewound

Motoplats have positives and negatives. The positive is they produce more spark energy than any Japanese ignition and the spark energy increases as RPM increases, so no Roost Boost is needed. Motoplats are simple, they are easily repaired, and there are always lots of good used parts on eBay. The down side is, they have low spark energy at cranking speed, while Japanese ignitions are much higher at cranking speed. Also, the epoxy covering the stator windings cracks, which allows moisture in the windings, which leads to corrosion and the eventual failure of the stator. The other down side is, they are all old and if you have a working one that has not been rebuilt, it will eventually fail. The last thing I would do is adapt a Japanese ignition, if you didnt want to repair the Motoplat there are several good aftermarket ignitions that are as good or better than a Japanese ignition and are intended for that application.

I will go against the grain here and say "why not"? Give it a try. I have owned a 1983 Honda CR480 and also 1986, '87 & '88 Honda CR500's and never had ignition or starting problems with any of them. I even adapted a Honda ATC250R lighting coil ignition to my '88 Honda CR500 to race at night in Baja and had good results. Bottom line is I feel Honda Japanese ignitions are quality products and if you can make it work on your Husky, good for you. Keep us informed as to your progress and results.

But why spend the time adapting an old ignition to a old vintage bike when there are modern bikes that can provide something. A modern KTM comes to mind, or anything else. Since modern Ignitions are reliable they must sell for next to nothing when a bike is parted out.

Almost all modern ignitions rotate the wrong direction, the CR480 is left side kick/right side magneto so it rotates the same direction as a Husky. I still wouldnt waste my time on it when there are better options that bolt right on.
