  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Hillclimbing

I am 230lbs and my 2012 310 pulls me up any hill every time. 13/48 gearing is what I currently run so 1st gear for me if its really steep but 2nd is good too. No problemo. The 310 is a very good hill climber IMHO. Smooth power and I usually sit as much as possible to keep better traction.

Im also Recon. I only went to Iraq tho, not Afghanistan. Volunteered to go there but the budget apparently fell out on that one.
Thanks for your service bud and anyone else here reading whos also served. Im glad you made it back. Its a roll of the dice alot, aint? I was glad to make it back from Ramadi back in 06.
As for the OP and the hill climbs questions, these guys all hit it on the mark. I climb some random hills out here in PA ranging from super steep little crawls thru the woods to gnarly long coal shale hills. Always on the clutch, try not to lose your momentum, always pick a line, and stand up as much as you can.
ONLY , you are awesome and thank you for your service.

Mate never let age get in the way of what you love doing. I am in my 60's (that not old by the way) and still have a crack. Just be the best you can be given your natural condition at the time. After a ride I am stuffed and invariably had a few get offs but also deleriously satisfied.
I agree 100% !

4th Infantry Division , 710 buffalo soldiers , Kandahar Afganistan , 7/10 - 6/11. How about you ?
Peyton is about 10 minutes away. I was in 110, also Buffalo soldiers. I got out 5 years ago just figured I'd ask. I still operate a training area on Carson so I'm sure we've crossed paths. Just so you know, the husky dealer about 45min from his house rents Husky's and the dealer is 10 minutes from some amazing riding

Awesome , he is in the reserves now but still on Carson , he got out in 2012, he just rides Harley s with his club , we had a bunch of quads well 5 when he went in the service , I sold them and went to the street bikes , my buddy rides dual sports and got me hooked , I still have a shit ton to learn but I am getting there ,

Hey guys need some advise , never really went up a really steep hill on a dirtbike and want to . 2 questions I have the 12 te 310 all power up done , will this bike climb a steep hill , been up some good ones on my raptor 700 , next a guy told me not to shift into first but to work the clutch in second , not sure what that means , and advise from the vets would be appriciated ! Thanks

First, your bike and about any bike can climb straight up a tree, so you have plenty of bike.... I'd say you have a pretty good clue on climbing if you have been do climbs on that raptor ... After a couple attempts, I think you will have a feel to how climb steep hills...

That video posted by Boogie has about all you need to know to give you a fighting chance up and over your hill ... (We will need pics or a video to further help with the climb :). ) The hill there looks very much like what I like to climb here... Gnarly and different lines going up the hill with many stepUps along the way ... I can ride up and down hills like that all day ...

Your friend is probably saying stay out of 1st gear because it too slow, or maybe he thinking your back tire is gonna break loose on the hill in that low a gear before you go over the top and you will just start spinning the tire on the way up...

He's saying to use 2nd gear and and allow the clutch to slip slightly.. Being in 2nd gear gives speed and the feathering allows the engine to REV slightly, keeping it away from a stall... Just like on the video ...

Clutch feathering is pulling in on the clutch lever slightly as the machine is moving to allow the engine to gain REVs or at least, not to loose REVS and stall. These HYDRO clutches work very well for me when feathering... All I do is put a little weight on clutch lever, maybe a pound or two, and just listen to the engine sound while feeling the traction that is applied to the ground at each moment. That's dirt bike riding!!! I play with my clutch all day long when riding, ESP to control my 250cc 2t bike ... This feathering action separates all riders skill levels ... Sort of like upper level math classes ...

Good luck and don't forget about the video or pics of the climb attempt :)

Cool. I have a close friend in the 160th. He's been hangin out with those ladds.
I worked "among" Team 3 in Ramadi. They usually showed up to our OPs or hides and would be like "we need you to move, we want this spot". Well...Hello Mr Fancy Pants haha. What were we gonna say? No? Haha.

When were you in Ramadi? I bounced between there, Fallujah and Baharia a couple of tours. Not a ton of fond memories.

The pic in my avatar is with a Ranger buddy that simply gave too much. That trip to American Flag mountain on his new KTM was a turning point. Dirtbikes are the best therapy I know.

Did you serve with the 2nd Rangers ?
