  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Highest Mileage TE/SMR 449 or 511

A Class
Hey all, just starting this thread to see what kind of mileage people are getting out of this motor. As far as I know, the SMR and TE 449's and 511's engines are just about identical so a direct comparison is possible. I want to try to keep track of the higher mileage bikes and see if any issues pop up. I am not talking about fuel mileage. I would like to know how many miles your bikes have and if you have had to do any engine work yet. I have a 2012 TE511, just rolled over 1000 miles. I have done oil changes and one valve adjustment. 80% dirt, 20% street. I really want to see if there is anyone with more than 5,000 or even more than 10,000 miles on one.

For me I have had a bad run blown head gasket on my SRM511 at just over 2,500Km's. Followed the break in period to the letter and have change the oil twice and got the dealer to do the first service at 800km. The dealer is stripping down the motor this week and will go in and see how it looks regarding to any wear and tear on the other components as if there is anything else that looks slightly off/worn I am going to get them to replace it under warranty. Will keep you posted.

I have owned mine since Dec21 and have 39 miles on it, does that count for anything?

What an underachiever..........just kidding!

I picked up my 2012 TE on December 22nd and have all of 128 miles so far! I've had a smile on my face all 128 miles!

Should be a super spring!

Just done over 3500 miles on my SMR511 which only has race map 2 installed.
Runs nicely and has never let me down.
Clutch was very heavy and creaky when warm so just had the clutch slave cylinder replaced under warranty.
Seems a reliable engine (probably a bit more modern than the 510 and 450's) but I suppose it really comes down to mechanical sympathy (warm up before riding hard, no wheelies/redlining in every gear, amount of tuning) of the rider.
My local shop just sold a SMR510 with 11k on the original motor!
I rode it and the engine was still really strong

My 511 has a touch under 4,000km, a mates 449 has a touch under 10,000km and the dealer's riding mate is said to have 17,000km on his TE449 (no rebuild, yet to go bang)...

Mine less than a month old give me till fall and we will see, I ride a lot, everyday street, a couple of
Times a week dirt. The TE will see a couple of times a week.

Just hit 5K Miles... 8km. Only inspections @ this point. Hand full of Races.. some harsh Desert riding. Bulk of the bikes miles, Dual sporting.

This is the mileage as of last Friday on my SMR 511. Haven't owned it for a year yet.

Dirt miles are different from tarmac miles. Longest I have heard of a dirt ridden 449 going was 14K miles and it needed a rebuild.

(If you use 50W oil in a 449 and you pin it for 500 miles across the Ca desert, you will need an engine rebuild, tested multiple times.)

Yah but what if you aren't pinning it on tarmac constantly. I'm about to pick up a 450 (going Honda tho - keeping the husky 250 for the gnarly off road stuff) so I can ride more road between trails. The roads wouldn't be more then 50-55mph. I'm guessing a 450 engine can sustain those speeds without too much wear - ie: get 10k miles + with proper maintenence before rebuilding anything. But it probably also depends on rider and gear.

I would think most engines would succumb to that type of abuse. Nascar guys go through at least one engine at each race. Top fuel dragsters get a complete tear down between rounds. My 449 hasn't even had the valve cover off yet though, hehe

14k is great IMO. If I can get that outta mine before a rebuild, I will be ecstatic. On another note, for some reason I can fill my bike with the correct amount of oil now and it doesn't piss it into the airbox anymore. Must be just a break-in thing?
