  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

250-500cc Help with WR300 Headlight

I have the tank off; there's no yellow wire. My bike appears not to have a lighting coil and I'm beginning to think one of the previous owners changed the ignition. Is there a way to add a lighting coil short of buying all the factory ignition components?

I think in 2010 the WRs got the digital Ducati ignition in place of the older ignition like my 09 has with a 55 amp stator and the yellow wire. I could be wrong about the year, maybe someone with a 2010 might chime in.

I have a 2014 with a yellow wire beneath the tank. Believe it's for lighting purposes but have not tested it. I do have the Ducati ignition too.

My 09 came with the headlight already wired up and was not on a switch so it worked all the time. My owners manual has a diagram but it shows what ever model has switches and turn signals brake lights and all the necessary things for a street legal bike. If I remember right some people with the Ducati ignition were having trouble starting their bike with the light turned on so you might want to put an on/off switch in series on the ground side.

I'm going to remove the case, flywheel weight, and flywheel so I can see just what I've got in there. Hopefully, I'll be able to tell if I have an original pre-Ducati type WR300 ignition, a Ducati type, an older CR type, or something else.

Pull the tank. The visible CDI unit will say Ducati on it. These came stock in 2011+.

Pulled the case, removed the Steahly FWW, and found that my bike has a CR250 flywheel with markings, JAPAN 65787 FP8156. Now, I at least know what I have and can try to figure out if it's worth going back to an original ignition set up. Talked to my local Husky parts guy - looks like I can buy a new "generator" (flywheel and stator), CDI unit, coil, and voltage regulator/rectifier for around $420. Would probably need a wiring harness or two and some other odds and ends as well.
Anyone have any suggestions or know about the pros and cons of doing the swap?

Guys, I have an 09 WR250. I see from the posts in this thread that I should have the older ignition and a yellow wire under the tank. And, there are some contradicting posts about if the bike already has a regulator/rectifier. If I pull the tank and find this yellow wire, does that mean it's DC or, to run LEDs will I still need a regulator/rectifier? I see a reg/rec on the baja designs site for $37 so I don't have a problem buying one, but I just want to verify if I need to or not??

My 09 WR 300 had the yellow wire but no regulator/rectifier. Rodney from Beaver Creek Cycle told me to spend a couple extra dollars and by the original Husky regulator/rectifier. I did and my light works fine although my head light is not a led buy regular bulb but my tail light is a led and it works fine.

What began with looking for the yellow wire so I could install lights on my 2010 WR300 has finally concluded with these events:
  1. Discovered that the bike had a CR ignition on it with no yellow wire.
  2. So, decided to order a brand new OEM ignition and whatever wiring harness(es) and parts I needed to complete the job in a quality fashion.
  3. Bobby J's in Albuquerque was able to get everything I need: ignition with light coil, rectifier/voltage regulator, and a couple of key wiring harnesses. This process took several months because I was ordering things as I discovered and decided what I needed one step at a time and step by step. Also, made sure I could get the ignition before I committed to any of the other items. It alone, was on back order for several weeks with no guarantee of getting it. When it came in, I was fully commited.
  4. An example of how step-by-step I took is that once I got the ignition, I discovered that I needed a new nut and washer as the CR parts were different, so I had to wait another week for them. Also, deciding on the headlight and tail light was not easy and I spent much time reading forums and opinions and shopping on the internet.
  5. Decided on the Polisport Halo headlight, the DRC Edge aluminum tail light, a Trail Tech 3-position with kill button handlebar switch, and a Baja Designs pressurized rear brake light switch. Also, wanted to do this without a battery.
  6. Wired the lights so that the small running light and brake light work any time the engine's running and the headlight low/high beams and tail light can be swithed off with the switch.
I think the job turned out great and now I have a registered and insured, street legal two-stroke!

Great work! :)
Have bike some difference with new WR ignition in throttle response or engine power?

Others who have switched from a WR ignition to a CR ignition could answer this question better than I as I haven't riddent this bike very much with either ignition.
One of the main reasons I bought it was to have a street legal two stroke. It came with a street legal title and was easy to license and insure, but it had no lights. I started the project as soon as I bought it and switched ignitions before knowing how it performed. I wanted the lights and knew the only way to get them was to switch ignitions, so didn't really want to know if doing so would hurt performance. :)
