• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Help needed with a 1981 420 AXC.

DG29

Husqvarna
AA Class
Hi, new member here. I have recently acquired a 1981 (or 82 ) 420 AXC 4-speed.
After purchasing the bike I needed to get a new gas tank for it and clean the carb since it was stored away in a desert airport hanger since 1990. Anyway, I've taken the bike to George down in Santa Ana Ca. to clean the kick starting one-way bearing since it was not engaging every time. He had told the everything looked good but that this bike has had some mods done to it. The swing arm is slightly longer, the front had been slightly raked, and that the exhaust pipe was not original Husky. We test rode it and the bike, engine and transmission work perfectly and the bike is a flat out rocket. In fact, he had told me that I needed to ride it harder on the throttle and I'm getting a bit too old to ride like that. In the little research that I've done I've noticed that the 81-82 420's did not come with these factory shocks. Anyway, I will have a new title for the bike and I think that I will just sell it because if something breaks on it I will not be able to afford to repair it.
So my question is doe anyone on this forum know what the value of a 81 420 AXC would be in this condition?
Thanks in advance,

The frame is 83. So the shocks are ohlins ITC 83-84 which are on 83-84 frame. The fork is 35 mm.
The pipe is husky but not the AXC surely a cr/wr/xc 81-82-83 (430 ?).
The silencer is an aftermarket.
Not sure
For the value put an add and see !

Can you put some close-up pics of swing arm and of the other side ?

Interesting.
Sounds like someone built a bike around a good 420 engine.
The engine looks to be an 82 by the silver, not black, cylinder.

IMHO, since it's not all original, the real value is in the Auto engine. Auto engine parts are hard to come by.

The Frame is a 81-82, (CN01191) George looked it up. I have titled the bike as a 81 (as he had advised me to) and the pink slip showed up today. The engine plate shows it as 2085 0199 . Its a 4 speed and moves through all of the gears, George took it up to about 85 mph. I'll put up a couple more photos when I get a chance later today.

The Frame number is (CN01191). The tank, seat and side plates are more like a 84 500 AE. The bike was sold to me as a 84 500 AE Hi-Flite by the original owners widow. It also has a large aluminum non- Husky air box. I actually like the look ( and probably function ) of what someone has done with this 420 but it is not as the factory had originally outfitted the frame....I think. Included in the sale was two bottles of the original Husqvarna Automatic transmission fluid with one being full and the other empty. I goes out today on a ride to warm it up and flush the transmission fluid as George had suggested I do. Golden Spectro two stroke exhaust smoke will be in the air! :)

In regards to the silencer on the pipe, I placed that sticker on it and have no idea what manufacturer made it. As to the frame, George looked it up and I've looked it up and it is a 81 to 82 AXC. Someone may have put another year swing arm on it, as George had mentioned that it was longer. Taking all of this into consideration, does anyone have a guesstimate as to the value of this 420 AXC ?

It has an 84 air cooled model tank - looks like it's been painted so expect it to peel off. Frame is 83/84/85 and not 81/82. Alloy air box means it definitely was a project bike for someone - impressive going to that effort. Lengthened swing arm probably means it was a WR/AE swing arm converted to longer CR/XC spec for desert racing maybe? Skinny 35mm forks are possibly off the 81WR or earlier bike that was the source of the motor. HyFlite is just the seat cover manufacturer - nothing to do with the bike modifications as far as I know. Very interesting mix of parts and other than the skinny forks is probably quite a nice machine. Value is in the eye of the beholder here as it is a hybrid. Expect it to be worth less than an original model. Good luck with this bike!

Its not an AE/WR its a CR chassis, no rear frame loop and the rear brake pedal is the CR style. The CN frame number indicates an '81 CR, I think what you have there is an '81 CR chassis with '83-'84 ITC shocks, '83-'84 Clarke aftermarket tank and a 420 auto engine.

1981 with modified frame and modified swingarm, anybody who can make the airbox out of aluminium woudl be able to mod the frame.the triangular section under the seat looks too vertical for an 83 and the swingarm has two sets of holes, but maybe its an auto thing.

Agree with jo360, the frame section below the seat is too vertical for an 83, 84 frame. Here's a picture of my 83 for reference, the upright member that the shocks attach to leans forward on 83, 84. Must be a modified '81 frame with ITC's. Just my humble opinion. Interesting bike.

Good spotting on the CR brake and unusual frame mod. It does seem to be an earlier frame modified to take the ITC shocks like an 83/4. Very interesting......

It is interesting to see how many details the Husky riders on here pick up from photos of a bike.
I suspect that the swing arm had to have another hole placed farther back as the ITC shocks would likely have been too long when mounted to the forward hole.
That Hi Flite seat going that far up the tank seems like a good idea.
