  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Help finding an oil leak?

Any tips on finding an oil leak?

I purchased an 08 TXC 250 just a couple of weeks ago. Upon receiving it, I had issues removing the drain plug as it was cross threaded. I finally pulled it out and chased the threads and purchased new drain plugs from 7602 racing. After two rides, I noticed the oil level seemed a bit low. I drained the oil and measured 1 L of oil in which I had just put in 1.6 L 2 rides before. I've stored my bike in my garage and have not seen any drops of oil on the floor. However, I do notice some oily areas on the bike.

I expected the bottom drain bolt that had damaged threads was where the leaking is coming from, but it doesn't seem to be that way as I'm not seeing any drops on the floor.

Not sure if this is normal or if I'm just making some newbie mistake as I'm still very much of a beginner. I hope the photos help.

I will be adding new oil tomorrow AM and am curious if anyone has tips to find what seems to be a slow leak?

"puff" some baby powder around the cases and watch for a colour change, this will indicate where abouts your leak may be coming from. From your pics, it looks like maybe near the sprocket, case cracked???

Thanks for the tip.

Just changed my oil and unscrewed the overflow tank to get a better look at the cases but am not finding anything with the baby powder. Just hoping that the case isn't cracked..

I'd tighten up those case bolts... Had a leak under starter motor and it looked allmost same, not so much oil though.

I have a 2008 tc250, steady slow drip of oil coming from between the cases. Tighten the case bolts as much as you can. I found the front one to be the culprit. Follows the engine down and drops near the drain bolt so it looks like it is coming from near the back but it was actually the front bolt. Mine still drips a little but I'm not losing much so I've learned to live with it.

My 08 TXC250 sometimes needs the case bolts re-tightened to stop some small leaks ...ESP at the water can ...

I agonized over an untraceable oil leak on my KTM for months and it turned out it was coming from the countersprocket shaft. I haven't had this problem with any of our Husqvarnas, but it might be worth a look.

Those bolts that hold the overflow tank on end inside the case, as well as the bolts that hold the starter on and the waterpump bolts. Every one of those bolts should be removed one at a time, cleaned, then a small bit of high temp silicone needs to be put on the threads and replace them. I don't know if this is where your leaks are coming from but every one of those bolt threads will weap oil when the motor is hot. Thats where I would start, from where the oil seems to be coming from it could easily be the starter O-ring as well, I had a very similar issue on my 05 510, replaced the starter O ring 2 or 3 times before finding it was just weaping form the bolt threads.

Puffed some baby powder on the area and still can't seem to find the leak. If it sits, it doesn't seem to leak. Only after a ride..

Seems to be under the over flow tank?

where did you get you new o ring from please.

where did you get you new o ring from please.
I think I got it from an O-ring kit I have, Can't really remember though. You could pull it and go to an auto parts store and match it up or order one through a Husky dealer ot better yet, get an O-ring assortment to have around the garage-they come in handy.

Pull every motor case bolt one at a time. Put them back in with blue loctice at 70 inch pounds. Make sure the bottom oil drain bolt washer is smooth side to the case. Mine was on rough side to the case and it leaked untill I figured that out.

Check the countershaft seal and bushing behind the countershaft sprocket. I've had these go bad and cause a leak Only when your riding making it really hard to find. If you remove the sprocket you'll see oil on the back of it and the bushing will probably have a groove in it where the seal rubs against it.
