• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Helmet Recommendations

not sure if thats directed at me and if i came off strong its for a reason and i make no appologies. safety aint no joke and i wont skimp on lids for me or mine.

poly lids are fine and safe in most cases as i said. but, they are by no means a premium lid. they do not function nearly the same as a premium layered one does on a lot of fronts, esp on imacts at or near the upper scale of the threshold of survivability. i wont even being to go into details as i dont think its appreciated or taken well by some, sorry if thats the case.

suffice to say, none of the road or moto race teams use poly helmets where i work.

poly lids are good.

but if you haul ass? wear "glass".

Not at all,I'm with you. I have only one head and a little brain and need all the protection I can get. I have been wearing Bell since 1970.

I've had way too many helmets to count, get one that fits. I went from Arai to HJC CL-x6, the HJC's fit my head better and they are very economical. I'm on my 3rd CL-X6 and love them, I ride a lot (and crash a lot) and replace my helmet every year so a great helmet, IMO, for around $120 seems wise to me, maybe it's just my $120 head talking...

One of my riding buddies had a new Suomy on the weekend.
Model is Mr Jump Killer Loop.
(They must have a pre-teen coming up with these goofy names...)
Very impressive lid, seemed like it was just over half the weight of my Klim bucket.
I want one.

Haha, yea. I don't find this thread useless, and I enjoy oil threads. Most of the information from CH members is pretty good and is usually from some sort of logical thought process.

I like the Fox and HJC's are great too, both are Snell and Dot approved. I remember being at a race down in Mexico one year and they wouldn't let us race with out both of those ratings and we ended up going back to the trailer to get a different helmet. You need a helmet that is a good fit and doesn't give you headaches at the end of the day. Being from Southern California, I enjoy helmets with lots of air vents, I can always close them off when it's cold out.

Ive tried a lot of brands. Fox, shoei, hjc, Fly, troy lee designs, arai, etc. Having a skin condition and not being able to sweat make me a very picky person when choosing a helmet. I had been using a Fly Formula helmet for awhile (around $399) and loved it. Super comfy lining and felt and looked good. I recently tried the new TLD SE3 helmet, and it's sized very small and has a small viewing port for goggles. So no go. I ended up going with the new FOX V4 helmet. Very nice looking and the inner shell is perfectly forming fitting. It even flows air pretty well. Picked it up for $517.

After quality certifications, fit it the most important thing. It's so personalized that you have to try them on-don't just order on-line (unless you've checked it out first).
I remember back in the 70's my buddy sent his bell moto-star back to Bell to be painted. He was soooo excited to get the box back, only to open it up and find his helmet in three pieces! They told him it was unsafe to use anymore...no offers for replacement discount or anything.

I haven't worn it yet because I just ordered it but online (motorcycle superstore) has AGV AX-8 helmets on closeout for $99 they are $379 normally. Hope I like it.... I had a higher end M2R, but 2 weekends ago while it was resting on my handlebars and the bike leaning against a tree, the bike came crashing down with the helmet absorbing the impact and the shell cracked, It was about 1.5 years old....

buddy of mine just got the Fox V1 on sale and likes it a lot, think it was around $150. he also bought an AFX helmet, very affordable ($80?), seem to get real decent reviews but he liked the Fox better. (mainly for the graphics)

for me, i wear Troy Lee Designs. the Air and an SE3. love them, but neither was cheap. fit my head well, super comfy interiors and easy to clean.

I bought a Scorpion helmet and I like it a lot for the money. It has this pocket that you pump up behind the geek pads so you can get it snug to your head. Then you release the air when you take it off. I thought it was more just a spiel but it actually works. The helmet isn't the lightest but its a good balance between ventilation and noise reduction.

Like others have said, you need to try them on. Suomy, Arai, and Shoei are the best helmets I've ever worn though. I found it easier to research street bikes lids and I've noticed that the good and bad qualities are the same for about their whole line. So even if you can't find reviews for the dirt helmet, the street review will still be useful. Good luck, there are a ton of choices

Just recieved My Bell MX2 Lots of borrowed Moto 8-9 tecnology , with a better price point, I recieved on Closeout 2013, $143.00 from Motocross Giant. Really Nice excellent fit true to size and Very Light, seems much lighter than mt Troy Lee I am going try both on tonight for weight comparison. Have not rode yet with it but would recomend so far!

I traded in my Arai helmet today for a Fox V4.

And? You suck Tinken. Where's the comparison lol
Thanks, I think...
The Arai VX Pro I am replacing is no joke. It's one of those feel good helmets and you know you are protected. So why did I replace it? I took a nasty fall at 55+ and I crushed the inner foam. So it was new helmet time. The Fox V4 offers great protection, but the main points here are light weight and massive air flow. And it doesn't cost $620 usd.
