• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Helmet Recommendations

Looking for a recommendation for a good quality closed face motocross style helmet that won't break the bank. DOT and Snell preferred. Any recommendations? Thanks.

Take a look at the Kali helmets. Super lightweight and fit very nicely. I have a Carbon Graffiti, and my brother uses the Prana.

The Bell Moto 9 is very well made. I bought a brand new one (Tilt model) that fell off the shelf at the local MC dealer showroom for 225 dollars. I don't care that there are a few small chips of paint missing. After a couple singletrack rides through the brush, the helmet is going to be missing more paint than that! You can also find some non current models on the internet for under 300 bucks.

Seriously though, there are a lot of good helmets on the market that cost between 90 and 300 bucks. Some of these cheaper ones often carry the same safety certifications as the expensive ones. The important thing is to make sure that the helmet fits you properly and comfortably.

I picked up a 1 or 2 year old display model... Shoei VFX-W. Saved $200. My head only fits certain brands of helmet, Shoei being one. When confronted with the good deal, and Shoei saving my skull 30 years ago, it was a no brainer.

I dont want to say what I paid for my Troy Lee Design "Air" helmet but Id check out Toytech's selection and pricing. Yes, its a shameless plug for a local dealer but he sells many helmets on his ebay store, worldwide. Crazy prices.

One that is DOT and Snell approved, moves skin when you twist it from side to side and doesn't leave you with a head ache. :)

I wear Arai.

I kno this much, after wearing junk helmets for a couple years, theres nothing like wearing a high quality, lightweight, and comfortable helmet. Its worth spending the money on a good lid.
Anyone remember the old Bell Helmet add?
If youve got a $10 head, buy a $10 helmet.

I tried the lower end fox helmet on at a store a couple months ago and was surprised at how comfy it was. I think they're about $150.

I got a left over Suomy last year. Big discount... the graphics were not my style but it is amazingly light, nice airflow, and an open viewing area. My neck felt like I had been weight lifting and took all the plates off. Looking: Left right up down left right was effortless- amazing what you can get used to...

Yeah my new lid that hasn't seen dirt is a Suomy MX Jump. Can't believe how light and comfy it is. Reasonably priced too, can't wait to try it.

Best off road helmets are NOT just Snell approved. Buy a helmet either dot, ECE or a blend of them and Snell. Snell prior to 2010 had greater G force impact approval vs. the others. In a 2010 Snell helmet the forced was reduced to what DOT and ECE used. Shelf life of fiberglass is just over 3 years on average. Buy a helmet based on comfort and fit not brand, color or price. Just some info your head would like.

I've gotta say +1 on the Suomy also. Light & physically smaller than other brands, which made a huge difference with the fitment of my Leatt. Previous helmet was a Thor, which was heavy & restrictive with the Leatt........... But probably going back to the Bell Moto next

Man how could you consider going back to a bell after owning a Suomy? I had a bell and sold it after a couple of rides. My thor was was lighter and more comfortable then the bell but the Suomy is night and day lighter and better vented then the thor.

I understand the Suomy is lighter and smaller, but what about protection? I don't see anything about Snell or DOT ratings on their site.

My last few helmets have been Airoh and i won't use anything else, got my latest one about a month ago and its awesome!! weighs 950 grams, great ventilation and comes with peak extension and covers for the air vents for wet weather
