  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

250-500cc Hard starting after warming up?

Husqvarna
Pro Class
This is new. It's an 09 wr300. Have a lectron with 3-2 metering rod. Perfect compression. Starts first kick every time when cold. Runs awesome. Just explodes through the middle of power band. But....when warm now it's hard as hell to kick over. It was taking like 5-67,8 kicks. I was bump starting when possible. Rode the last couple three days in a row. Exact same deal every day. Starts first kick, runs awesome then hard as hell to start when warm. Oh and I blew an oring this weekend on the exhaust port. It's also running a tad rich as spark plug was dark with a little splooge out muffler. I run 40-1 Castro synthetic premix(which I have done from day one on this bike) Suggestions? Is it just too rich combined with oring being blown out or...?

if its a sudden change i would be looking at ignition. a weaker ignition could be giving you a false rich condition. does this bike have the weird ducati ignition?
just weird that all of a sudden the bike is running richer..many ignition problems start when the engine gets hot

No it's the 09 and supposedly it doesn't have that weaker ignition. But yes- it's suddenly started doing this as of this last weekend.

No idea what is happening with yours, but like the others, mine did the same thing before the ignition took a dump. Would start up fine when cold and after a few rides of hard starting when warm, it just wouldn't start anymore.

changed plug-forgot to mention that. Also forgot to mention I switched bikes with my friend and he said it seemed like it was way way rich. Blubbing up top. Guess didnt even notice. So took slide off lectron just now and gas just poured out everywhere. So I leaned it out a half turn. Seemed to be nice and crisp now. Fired up first kick. Let it idle up till almost boiling point and shut it off. Bike fired right back up first kick(wouldnt do that last couple days). Hopefully its just a case of having the thing so rich it was causing these symptoms?

when you say it has perfect compression, when was the last time it was checked? engines with get rich symptoms as compression gets lower. glad it seems you got it sorted. you say it was blubbering up top, was it possible the pj screw got turned somehow? they are sensitive

Also check to make sure your choke is tight. Mine didn't loosen up on it's own. but I took my Lectron apart to clean and forgot to tighten the choke and it ran like crap.

Keep us posted on this one. I'm not 100% convinced you solved your problem, but I hope you did. Have you ridden it yet to confirm, or was the idling your only test? My oem stator on my '11 wr300 went bad last spring, but it would only fail after the bike was fully warmed up and been under a decent load for 10 minutes or so; i.e., getting busy on some undulating singletrack. It would cut out a few times, then die, and not start. When the engine cooled down some it would start up again easily, then cut out and die again after I got going. Thought it was fuel/carb issue. Nope. Bad stator. New oem unit put me back on the trail...after checking everything else of course. Talk to Bill at BMP about it. Something about the trigger wire in the stator becoming compromised when it heats up. Your issue is a little different in that's hard to start after it's warm rather than dying like mine did, but since it's a new problem I'm suspecting something else unless you fiddle with the carb, or something happened to it while riding, before the hard starting occurred. Good luck!

I didnt ride. Just let it idle till almost boiling over. My issue sounds slightly different than yours. It would run just fine until i would kill it. I pulled slide of lectron to lean it out a quarter turn and gas literally poured out everywhere. Hopefully it was just way to rich. Tempted to buy the new coil just because

I don't understand this. Poured from where? The carb was full of fuel? Thats not jetting that's plugged overflows.
When I pulled the slide off to lean out the metering rod gas poured from top of slide. That never happened in the past so I assumed that wasn't good.

Firecrotch, your bike has a different ignition than Brians and they do not have the problems that the ducati ignitions on the newer bikes have. It sounds like it may be fuel related and hopefully you can test ride the bike after adjustment before springing for a stator.

I am having the exact opposite issue with my 12 wr300 with a 36mm lectron. When the bike is warm it starts no problem and runs well. The problem is cold starts. I ussually have to pull the plug kick thru the stroke to clear the jug. Repeat till it starts. Did not have this issue when i first got the lectron. Compression seems fine as the bike rips once warmed up. Any ideas?
Choke won't stay up after a kick.
