  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Hairy oil filter, what is this stuff?

Are there any cats missing in your neighborhood? Does your wife or girlfriend know where the oil filler is? If she complains you ride too much I'd be wary man.

I changed my oil + filter last night. My 2010 310 (Cagiva/Italian like yours) has 5000km on it now and when I pulled the filter it had a very small amount of that "stuff" in there also. In another post I said my bike had a stainless filter (i mixed up my bikes sorry!) but it in fact does have a disposable filter like yours. I cleaned and reused that filter from a previous change and am wondering if re-using the filter causes it to clog/catch finer particles?

Is the filter used which you recently found the "stuff" in a fresh one or re-used?

It looks to me like fine brass filings/shavings, but there isn’t any brass in the motor is there? Maybe something with Cad plating??

After a bit of thought could it be the nikasil coating? Has anyone seen any of the raw material before application onto a cylinder??

Both your bike (10,000km?) and mine have a fair few miles on them...

If you can see it ... it's pretty big as compared what a filter can catch ... Sounding more like the filter stuff ... If you have a filter left over from a previous change, maybe cut it apart and see what it looks like inside ...

There are a few brass bushings in the motor I think ....

Mine was a fresh filter, the stuff is super light weight, think of the finest hair and its even more delicate than that.
If you left a drain plug or filler plug ofF all night or time enough for a mouse to seek shelter.... I once had a mouse nest fill the inside of my crf450r airbox and road it with it in there , had just serviced it 4 months prior. I think a mouse crawled in there while he had a chance and the bearings and gears liquified it,Hopefully it's not blocking the oil flow in your engine anywhere .

I guess the golden hair was a one time thing, this oil change, the filter was damn near perfect, nothing in the screens or on the drain plug either.

I've been waiting for an update on this. Glad to see we've concluded it was nothing too serious********************************************************************************!!
