• Hi everyone,

    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

GoPro 3, Sony or Contour+2.

Dead battery, reaching the upperlimit of file size when it stops working, it will not operate and charge at the same time, and most recently - a movie file was corrupted.

It probably does not help that many of the features/settings cannot be set via the device itself, it requires a smartphone with their custom app to be downloaded from their site, and I don't have a smartphone.

I will be sure to do a full evaluation at some point...

The fact that I already had a smartphone was another reason I went with the EGO so you do have a point there.
 
Any ideas on how to reduce wind noise? I have the EGO aswell, it all works great except for wind noise. I have it mounted on top of the visor. And is the EGO format of video simple to upload to a site like this?
 
Don't know about the EGO, but I stuck a piece of tape over the mic opening on my GoPro which pretty much eliminated all wind noise.

I recently bought a Replay XD1080 and the wind noise on it is terrible. I did the same tape thing on it but now you can't hear any thing at all. Going to try some foam next.
 
The EGO is pretty simple and works with my iphone but I havent tried to upload any videos in here. Id be interested in knowing that as well.
 
i have two Contours, the HD and ROAM, love the low profile goggle mount. ive used the sticky mount on my street lid, also works great.

friends have the GoPros... stick out way too far for me.

They use foam around professional microphones used outside to stop the low frequency wind noises. The tape would probably be more practical but does it muffle the sound a bit? The foam is only used on the mic piece
 
Contour Roam 2 for me. I like the slimline design & easy to use slide switch - no need to stop riding to turn on & off. Not as many mounting options as the GoPro & you need a pc to change the camera settings but it's just really easy & the picture is really clear.

I've just supaglued some mic foam (from Sena intercom = pretty thin) over the mic hole to reduce wind noise. It has helped but I'm going to try to glue another layer on top to try and reduce wind noise some more.
 
just to borad side you but what about the bullet hd? ive got the first gen of 720p, awesome camera dead easy to use mounted under visor and crystal clear, no cases neccesery as its waterproof and comes with 5 or so mounting brackets and options. well worth the money imho
ive never been a fan of gopro the footage always looks grainy and slightly laggy.

Coffee and K5PL5, Good input, I recently purchased the Ego as well and although it took a minute or two to figure everything out I gotta' say I really like it. If you don't have a smart phone I could see that the Ego would be a bust. But if you do have one, the wi-fi capability with the smartphone is actually pretty awesome and makes it super easy to share videos/pics with friends/family and bros/hoes! The video quality is awesome and the bottom line is that it is over half the price of the GoPro! I'm glad I went with the Ego, thanks for the comments!!!

Every video I've ever posted was with a Contour Roam ... Here are a few videos at the bottom of this thread..

Once in Youtube, you gotta bump up the video resolution to get HD quality...

Most cameras have a hard time going from bright sunlight to shade ... The contour does that about as well as most ...

EDIT: My videos will shake some due to my helmet mounting shaking ... I'm just not comfortable with gluing a holder on my helmet so I just have the strap around the helmet and unless I take extra time for mounting, I get some bangs from the cam ... I'm a rider and not a movie maker so I'm OK with my recording not being perfect ...
 
I have a GoPro Silver. Main reason, it was a gift. But I can tell you that the GoPro has the most mounting options of anything out there. I would totally do it again if I was buying. Unless you are really into making super hi res, super slow motion action sequences the Black is not needed.

I can tell you that it can surely handle abuse in hot or cold weather. Don't need any fancy wireless device to run it, but it can do that as well if you want to. Has optional remote, phone app control, even a add on screen to view your stuff right on the trail or in the lodge after some snowboarding. For all day fun, extended runtime batteries are available. The stock one is good for 4-5 hours with some simple power managing. I'll be taking mine scuba diving in Hawaii and wont need to buy a water tight case, because it comes with one good to 300+ feet.

I have been involved with shooting extreme sports since the very first lip stick cameras back in the early 1990's. The GoPro is solid, takes awesome footage, and can make any average guy bring home air worthy video time after time.

No I don't work for GoPro :naughty:
 
I've had a Contour 720, Contour Roam and now a GoPro 3 Silver.

I loved the ease of use of the Roam, but the image and sound quality of GoPro Silver is way better that either of my Contours. Plus, I really like the ability to go through the camera menu without needing a computer. I ended up selling the Contours.
 
Here is another thing you will have to deal with... Disk space ... I can't make a bad video so I try to save all ... If you ride alot and plan on videoing lots of it, you will need at least 500GB dedicated to these videos as a start... Maybe 1TB .. The GoPros make huge files I think ... Better video, bigger files ..

Also, unless you are wanting to turn into a video editor in your free time, best to do the editing on the fly when you create the videos and not include so much slop ... The contours have that part down with that easy on-0ff switch ... I mount mine on the left side of my helmet so I can turn it on and off without letting off the throttle :) ...

And, as I've said this here before;these devices take your mind off riding and burn up riding time... playing with the settings on the ride is not necessarily a good thing...
 
One more feature you might want to consider and I'm not sure who offers this but one cam also has a GPS on it somehow and records your ride on file ... Then when you review the video, it puts a small second window on the screen and shows the trail on a map as you watch the video ...

For me, I do this manually now as I watch where I turn the camera on and off and the same with the GPS some times to help pinpoint my location ... I normally never know where I'm at in the mountains and the riding here varies so much, it's hard to remember where the good stuff was it usually so if the recording device can help with this issue, I'm sure to consider this on my next purchase ...

Not too long ago, I saw goggles that had a small camera in the middle frame ... These might be the ticket ... But I don't like goggles as they are too hot ...

ust received my GoPro Black which replaces my older Hero HD that crapped out after 2 years. GoPro was good though out of warranty to offer a discount on the new model. I did some testing on road bike using time lapse to see frame rate/stop action as opposed to taking frames from video. Also shot 1080P 60 using Protune and GoPros Cineform Studio as well as Adobe Prmiere to process. Each works well. Protune mode is less processed so you can adjust to suit better in post. Right away I noticed much less noise in the sky and overall making good crisp images. I love the new wifi remote as well. Mounting the camera on a helmet or SUP, bicycle or helmet allows easy on/off and changing of settings with a pocketable or tether to anything remote. 2 stills follow, second a screen capture of the video, top is time lapse. A definite step up in clarity w/less noise for all.

Thee GoPro 3 Black offers a few fields of view instead of all wide though each is less resolution as probably a crop. The available fields of view change depending on chosen frame rate and use of Protune. I'm leaving on 12m. photos, 1080p60 video. Higher res. video/4k, looks good too but different aspects and slower frame rates for cinema use...
