  • Hi everyone,

    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Guys, I am in a unique situation. I am moving to a country where 250cc and less bikes are not charged import tax (two OR four stroke). Also, they do not allow bikes more than 8yrs old (2006+ is ok.) Sooooo...I am looking for a newer bike, under 251cc, that will serve for desert, enduros, and occasional track service. I will also ride it to work, but I can ride anything to work there, no issue.
I like my XR400 because it has good useable power everywhere, is very durable and is easy to ride. It could be lighter though. I am looking for suggestions on a bike that might suit my needs. I have ridden 300 2 strokes and found them to be a bit too much to handle in the tight stuff. Maybe a 200 or 250? I have also ridden a 250f (yammy) and it didn't seem powerful at all (are the husky 250's such that I could easily bolt a stock 280 or 300 cylinder to?) Either way, It needs to be able to run on premium pump gas. BTW, I am 150lbs. Thanks for the suggestions...
 
A TE250 will run a lot harder than the WR Yamaha. Do you need lights and all that? How about a 2 stroke?
 
Thanks guys, I am moving to Kenya. Easy maintenance will be key for sure. I am starting to think a 2 stroke is the best option due to light weight, simplicity. I just don't know if I could get used to riding one after riding a bike with so much low end and engine breaking all the time.
 
Depends if you are using the bike as a tool or a toy? If it was a tool go with an XR250r (have to find the XR somewhere other than Ameraica for the 2006+ rule) or if you want brand new go with the CRF250L (will be a classic). If it is a toy then go with whatever you can get parts for where you are going. The husky xlite motors are very differant than a honda XR motor (both good and bad).
 
Perhaps turn the question around?

Try to find out how difficult it might be to import a bike once you get there? i.e. go there, find out what bikes are popular, then base your decision off of that? Presumably parts (and possibly bike mechanics) would be available for the popular bikes at your new location...

Depends on what is important to you...
 
Yes, I imported a bike last time I was there and had HUGE headaches. Buying new there is out of the question (double new price here at least.) There is a ktm dealer there, but again, I would probably mail order any parts anyway. I am an aircraft mech by trade.
 
OK, you have been there before, you know bikes and are mechanically inclined...

Perhaps get with other Husqvarna riders for a quick test ride? Start a thread in the appropriate place here?

Its got just a little more power then a XR 400 in new condition but it is about 30 to 35 Kg lighter

it handles way way way way (did i say way) better then a XR 400

not to bash a XR 400 but they are very good average bikes and that's the difference. average.

thanks for alerting me to this! I am near Portland and will try and make it out there. It looks like my schedule will only allow me to be there on the 7th-8th, so hopefully there will be a few folks to hook up with. Cool, very excited!

Sounds great! I, and I believe Bills Motorcycle Plus will be showing up with demo bikes, in the afternoon Wednesday November 7th. And if things go normally, more people will be there on the 8th than the 7th.
