• Hi everyone,

    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Gasket Or Form A Gasket?

Another noob to huskys with a light weight question.

Got enough Ks on the new 630 to do an oil change & filter change and clean the screens. The seal between the clutch cover and crank case, is it a gasket (if so, can it normally be reused) or is it form-a-gasket to be redone every dis-assembly?

Love the bike, love the forum, thanks in advance for your input.

Re-use it? It's a paper type gasket. I have pulled that cover a few times and have replaced the gasket each time. Maybe I'm overdoing it. :)
 
For those of you cleaning the screens every oil change, are you finding anything on the screens? Mine were nearly spotless clean when i did the 1k mile oil change.
 
The left side screen gets some debris in it, but the right side stays pretty clean. Yes, reuse the gaskets multiple times. My dealer recently worked on my clutch and charged $27 for the gasket -- pretty expensive to replace every time you take off the right side case.
 
I clean the left one at each oil change; it almost always has some junk in it. I have removed the right side one a few times up until maybe 3000 miles on the odometer. Each time, it was completely spotless. I'll check the right side one again the next time I do the valves.

Thanks George. I'm assuming it is a paper or similar type of material.

On another note, I'm shopping for a skid plate, how can I get one of yours? I around Vancouver, BC

So you can reuse it many times but you need to use sealant or else it'll get hard next time and tear?
Or is it don't use sealant because it'll make it harder next time and will rear it?

He's saying do not use sealant. Sealant will make the gasket stick down and you might tear it the next time you pull the cover.
 
How does this sound,

Use a gasket sealant between the outer case and the gasket and rub grease or oil on the inside case to act as a release agent to help the gasket from tearing.just a thought.

On that subject,what is the best gasket sealant that you have had the best success with?
 
I pulled my clutch cover for the last screen check and put it back on. No sealant used and I reused the gasket. No leaks.

I also put a new valve cover gasket on and skipped the sealant. Again, no leaks, and that thing will be easier to deal with the next time I check valves.
 
OK, I must confess I never looked at the screens on my 610. I am from the "if it ain't broke" school. I mean, the screens are there to catch stuff...great. Do they really catch so much stuff that oil circulation wlll be impeded if they are not
cleaned? I think of the old sludge traps on vintage bikes, before there were filters, however eventually those were meant to be cleaned. Or do you guys clean the screens out of curiosity of what you will find? I'd rather spend my time checking the valves once every few thou...
 
The left side screen always has some stuff in it at every oil change. It's easy to get to, and a proper oil change on the bike requires cleaning that screen.

The right side screen is really only intended to be checked at valve check intervals. However, I have yet to find anything caught in that one, even after 9000 miles. YMMV.
 
Look at it like it's a fuse on a stick of dynomite. When they are out you can see if something unusual is going on if so cut the fuse before it goes BOOM. Reason for cutting the paper filter apart so can look at the bottom of the pleats to see whats happening before it does.
