  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

G450X v TE449

the two big ones are more power and rear suspension linkage on the TE. Tons of other differences. Pretty much two different bikes sharing an engine block. Most feel the TE is FAR superior.

Aesthetically attractive tubular frame on G450X; any performance difference there?

Probably lighter and EZer to drop the motor out but I for one hate bikes with no underframe. Scares the hell out of me charging rock gardens on something like that. Basically the BMW G450X was BMW first stab at a dirt bike. While somewhat innovative it needed a lot of refinement from the first iteration. It had a lot of stuff to sort out. The non link suspension was bashed for its horrible performance and the crappy forks did not help ether. The motor was somewhat boring. There were a few people who liked the bike but most did not. Just missed the mark in several areas. The husky was an evolution and big change from that bike. The motor block and gas tank were all that really carried over.

What about switchgear/electrics, general features, and overall build quality?
This is not the same situation as the Nuda vs F800R, is it?

TE has 6 speed gearbox and hydraulic clutch as opposed to 5 speed and cable, plus the linkage rear end. The TE was developed by Husqvarna from the G450X so it's effectively a later evolution of the similar concept.

The Nuda vs F800R comparison doesn't really stack up as the Nuda gained capacity and 20bhp, where as the TE is the same capacity / same power.

Ok, great answers, thank you both.

I prefer my G450X in just about every way. #1 the G450X is lighter, #2 the 5speeds of the G450X are wide ratio which is beneficial in a wider range of uses, #3 there is still more aftermarket support for the G450X in terms of fuel tanks and suspension set-up, #4 with the addition of a powercommander to the G450X there is no power benefit to a TE449 with powercommander fitted, same engine really. #5 the G450X has more ground clearance (also probably why it's lighter with less frame)

The TE449 did get some internal engine updates in 2012. I find the Counter Shaft Sprocket maintenance to be no biggie on the G450X and I'd rather have less bearings to maintain linkage-wise. I've got an Ohlins TTX shock on the G450X and haven't been on a TE449/511 that even comes remotely as close to soaking up the big hits at speed and still soak up trail trash. I also prefer the narrow feel of the G450X over the TE, particularly between the foot pegs. The TE449 is a great bike, but I think HSQ went a little overboard trying to make the 449 a Husky rather then tweak the G450X platform a tad and still call it a Husky.

And thats great but you are the only person I know that says that and I know you have many hours massaging it and are a huge advocate of that bike. Several of my friends rode the G450X and then my bike later and said the TE is decades ahead in performance and feel stock for stock. Based on reviews I have to believe that. Lots of options for fuel tanks now, not fair to say adding a $700 power commander brings it to almost the same power as that same money on a JD and muffler would make the TE way more powerful. Lighter? how much? Not much. Stock suspension is FAR superior both front and back on the TE. Again you are now comparing thousands of dollars of aftermarket shocks and suspension setup to stock TE. I think most everyone agrees the linkage made the bike far better. No real matainace on it as the linkage is up top and has grease nipples, mine looks brand new after 4000 miles of NW slop. Non issue. Every mag and person I know who rode the G450X said the suspension was horrible, not bad but horrible. Just want to make sure the OP get the full picture. You added thousands of dollars to the G450x you are talking about.

I'm guessing i'd very quickly notice the difference if I rode both.. which means I probably should ;).
Thank you all.

G450X is limited in availability now, hence the original question, and the TE449 is incredibly popular.
Next question; 449 or 511?

I have ridden both, might as well get thew 511 with a little more power as the rest feels exactly the same. the older 450/510 was a much more drastic difference.

449 if your trying to race in a class, 511 if your mostly a play biker like me. Also you can say you have the
biggest one, which is why I got a 511. (I am probably trying to compensate for something)

Almost every person that I know who rides a BMW 450, is the owner of a larger GS model who has decided to get a lighter machine of the same brand they are already riding. In other words, it seems like a brand loyalty sort of a thing.
