• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Foam Air Filters

I think I'm only on my second filter, the first one lasted 3 years, 15000 miles. The one on it now will last the life of the engine, its at 19,700 miles with no sign of stopping......

i was worried why my filters were lasting so long(?) as normally people say 6 months-year tops. i have my original from my 2010 wr300 still like new. shapes fine, no tears, looks good, just stopped using it out of guilt. keep it cleaned & oiled ready to go for a spare but i have like 7 in rotation. good to know others are getting years worth of use outta them. maybe a marketing ploy? diesel to clean oil/grease off, truckwash to get diesel out then rinse in clean water. motul air filter oil-stickiest crap on earth!

Interesting thread ..

Read more on ATF from page 1 and I might have to try that stuff ... Sounds ok except for the gasoline for cleaning ...

What is 'truckwash"? Brand? Thanks.

I'm "sticking" with this combo (or the TwinAir brand filter oil which is the same type as the Fab-1)
For now. Until you see what we have been testing out for Torco. - It's thin like gasoline, so it spreads quickly and requires very little to coat an entire filter. In a minute or two it evaporates to a surface so sticky you can pull cob webs from it.

How are they gonna get that past the VOC czars? :( I miss my Lawnboy mower...

ct-18 is a type of degreaser commonly known as truckwash here in AUS. good stuff use it for everything. forget who makes it, maybe chemtec or something along those lines, google it. 20L container is like $60 & lasts ages!

You just described silkolene air filter oil. Just be sure to wear gloves because it does get sticky quickly.

maxima the same way has the carrier solvent that evaps leaving a spider web creating touch and pull sticky oil on it.

My filters also last for years. I generally use 2 filters per bike, OEM and a UNI or twinair. My OEM KX500 filter left in the bike when I sold it after 14 years and 400 hours. Gas to clean and belray filter oil, but there are lots of great filter oils, PJ1 Maxima etc. I hear too many bad notoil stories to consider switching. I keep my old filter gas in an old gas can and give it to industrial shops that use a waste burner for heat, just pour into their waste tank. A friend cleaned his filter is his varsol solvent parts washer for years. It always seemed to work for him. Never tried it. Cam.

I just toasted a Twin Air filter this weekend. It sounds like kerosene/gas, and some non-typical filter oil is a favorite.

good ol gas, and a jug of bel-ray filter oil. soak that bad boy and squeeze out excess. no-toil sounds like more trouble than worth. not sure what they are trying to accomplish

Notoil works great. Very easy to clean the filter, comes out spotless the first time, no harsh chemicals or smell, dump it in your lawn when your done. Most people that try it dont go back. EZ and clean.

and the filters last a few years this way? seems some brands fall apart when exposed to notoil?

I used No Toil on my TE510 and the Twin Air filters lasted a long time - but another brand of filter disintegrated quickly.

I have another question about air filters though, maybe someone can help. I just removed the K&N that the previous owner installed and was having a hard time getting the stock basket and foam filter back in. (trying the Moose filters with neoprene base Maxima filter oil BTW).

Here's what I found:

It looks like the PO glued in a neoprene ring as a base for the K&N filter (without alignment holes needed for the stock basket - which is why the new filter wouldn't go in). My 510 had a rubber gasket and a screen, but there is no screen on this bike.

My questions:
Do I need to remove the neoprene and then get a screen with rubber gasket?
Can I just punch some holes in the neoprene and use it as-is?

Thanks for the help. That does look like what's been installed. I also watched the video at the link you provided.

I'm still not sure about what to do. Since there are no alignment holes in the PC Racing ProSeal ring, should I poke some holes in it?

I chose an air filter with a neoprene ring (before I knew about the ring that was installed). Can I run another neoprene ring on top of that or should I get a standard filter?

Dang - I figured swapping filters would be a 5 minute job. This has turned into a bit of a puzzle.
