    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Foam Air Filters

I know you will get different opinions on this but I personally do not run the backfire screen on my Husky. The bike does not run lean, so I never (so far) get back-firing. I just did not like the fit of the back-fire screen set up, it created a very poor seal IMO. So, I just run the plastic cage for the filter - my filter has the neoprene rim - so I get very good sealing. I would think you could carefully makes holes in the ProSeal ring where the plastic filter cage prongs fit into the indents on the airfilter box, make sure no debris gets into the airbox. Also would not see a problem running a filter with a neoprene ring - seems like you would get a very good seal as long as you make sure the filter cage prongs get seated well into the indents and you have the filter screwed down snug.
 
Thanks. That makes sense. The ProSeal takes about as much space as the rubber gasket around the screen did. I always worried that the screen didn't fit very well on my 510 anyway - kind of floppy.

Rain forecast for later this week - maybe I can get it muddy next weekend. :D
 
I ended up removing the base ring, it seemed like too much with a neoprene-base filter and I had a really hard time getting the screw started. On further investigation, the K&N filter (which I removed) comes with it's own special base ring - which is perhaps thicker than those mentioned above. Anyway, the filter goes in as easy as possible now. BTW - with the screen and related rubber gasket removed, there is no place for the four pins on the air filter cage. It aligns only at the center nut.

I've had the bike almost a month and finally got a good shakedown run in today (including some mud). It was not even a little dusty - so it was a perfect day to just make sure the filter was fitting correctly. Now I'm ready for some real riding.
 
The problem I'm having with No-Toil is, no matter how sparingly I apply it I'm getting excess oil in the air boot. Today there was even a light film of oil in the throat of the carb on the air boot side. Guess I don't need to worry about lubing the slide :rolleyes: This only seems to be happening in the last month or so, 80-90F.
The filter that's in now, a new TwinAir, I lightly saturated the outside in a plastic bucket, kneaded, squeezed and let it hang for a couple days, then used paper towels to remove any excess. There's no puddle in the bottom of the airbox. :confused:
 
I don't know mate, bike ran like shite a couple of days ago after being sweet for a couple of weeks. Only thing I can find besides a little dirt in my Lectron is the no-toil in my carb and a black plug. Cleaned it up, fresh plug and she's sweet again. I think it's a hot weather/no-toil thing and gonna keep an eye on it. Of course now it's cooled off and rainy for a few days :rolleyes:
I'm wanting to avoid the gas and solvents stuff, so really hoping this no-toil thing can work.
I had to use old gas to clean the blue goo out of the original filter, then a couple different detergents before it was really clean. Now it's done a round with no-toil red, cleaner, etc and oiled up and ready to go again. Seems fine so far.
Been using K&N in my XRs for years, because the increased air flow really helps when you uncork those engines. Just add a PC skin when it's dusty and no prob's ever.
Now have skins in the Husky too, brilliant! Replace the skin once a week instead of the filter. :thumbsup:
 
The NoToil green stuff gives the most issues ... I'm back to the red stuff now ....

Not sure what you are calling skins there NC but I was running some filter in a filter here for a while and that inner filter stayed very very clean....
 
For an inexpensive pre-filter that works, buy some hair nets from the restaurant supply. Oil them up and fit them over the filter :thumbsup:
 
PC Racing filter skin is a thin, stretchy foam that fits over the filter. I paid $10-12 for a 3 pack, seems expensive, but just the time saved is worth it to me.

The neoprene gasket is designed to eliminate the need for rim grease and provide a better all around sealing surface. The 4 pins on the filter cage are there to align the air filter to the cage and the backfire screen, they don't even contact the metal. The backfire screen removal is debatable, but imo the neoprene ProSeal should have been left in place. I have one on my 510 and it does it job great.

I use NoToil cleaner and green oil. I use warm water to dissolve the cleaner and wash the filters. Warm water seems to keep the filters intact while hot water seems to be a bad idea. I lost a couple of filters cleaning in hot water, it destroyed the glued seams pretty quickly.
 
those eaxct same filter skins are like $30-$40 here. what a rip! still gonna buy some though(find em cheap online):D. winter here & a bit of sand/mud riding so filter doesnt really get dirty just the sand & odd lump of mud/dirty water so not a bad idea i reckon
 
I used to use the hair nets on K&Ns and just toss 'em when dirty. The only ones I've seen lately don't look the same, not as thick and fluffy as I remember and don't look up to the task.
