  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Finally had a failure on my TE511

It's usually the regulator, got a whole bag full of them. Sometimes it's the stator. Easy to check, make sure there are open circuits or that the coils do not read resistive values.

Enjoy these years while you can, a littl electrical problem is childs play. when you get the 2014 Husky it will be as reliable as a KTM. bit like a Porsche, spending more time inthe garage than on the road. This is going by all my mates who own orange machines.

I need to check the stator again but I think my first hunch that it is the regulator is right. power coming out of the stator and does rise when reved (just need to remeasure each leg). Yes I had the stator completely unplugged when testing. Rectifier tests good. Connections all seem fine and bike is and was dry when this happened.

Hmm, is it just your trailech explorer effected? I had a very similar issue with my wr300 charging my trailtech explorer. Got worse and worse over time until wouldn't come on at all. Turned out to be outdated buggy software on my trailtech. Once i downloded that off thier website, installed on my explorer viola the world turned again.

No disconnected it and checked with my meter, same results.

You mean newer Porsche or older classics? My Dad and I used to race his 82SC and it was as reliable as anything I ever saw. Oh wait, guess I answered that myself. Older KTMs were much more user friendly too!

This is a good topic. I was having issues with starting up my bike (non-husky) and I've checked everything, valves ok, cleaned carb bowl, replaced spark plug, new battery..

Think it has to do with the Stator or Regulator (not sure where Regulator is adjacent to Stator?) .. Going to use a Voltage Meter and check for any grounded connections/wires and go from there.

Well its not the rectifier / regulator. Checked it with a good one, same thing. Will check the Stator wires again, CRAP. Looks like it might be the $450 stator! Sucks.

Kelly, what did you read coming out of the alternator? Did you take a voltage reading coming out of the regulator?
red/white and brown at the connector from regulator to start relay. Numerous times I have seen rubbed/grounded
wire around alternator. Did you check alternator to see if it was grounded (bad) or open?

I know your probably looking at the manual, but just in case, check the connector just above fuel tank. Disconnect
And check resistance with a quality meter (should read around .8 ohms.) if you have an amp clamp, at idle clamping
The yellow alternator wires one at a time should read about 11 amps. This is the best test, because a circuit that
is drawing correct amps running is not grounded or shorted. Also take reading after regulator and before start relay,
as the start relay is in between the regulator and the battery. So there is the potential for a bad connection there
or at the start relay.

Have you looked at the stator?
Had a 511 that had the same issue, all tests pointed to the reg.
Put in a new one same problem then took a look at the stator it was torn up I mean torn up bolts had come loose full of copper wire pieces everywhere.
What suprised me was it still ran every coil was ripped apart.
If I can find the pics will post.
Later George

Thanks George. I have not pulled the cover, will do today for a visual inspection. In my quick test (while the wife was waiting for me to leave) I got voltage out of all three legs but one seemed low. Don't know if it was i just didn't have good connection or if it was really low. Other two seemed fine. No noise. Oil looks fine. Will pop cover. Thanks.
