  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

A lot being here not the greatest reviews on BDS solutions.

They offer a lot of interesting solutions but sadly I've heard bad reviews.

Some other interesting solutions for the FE501

Fuel Rail http://www.ktmandhus...a3-e75a5832fa26 $89

Emission Delete and Kickstand fix (unless dealer is able to delete) http://www.ktmandhus...2e-63353240b5f8 $24.95

ktmandhusky.com is the same guy/company as BDS. steer clear, snake oil IMHO. save your $.

TPS tool is a handy device if you are planning on dialing on your TPS instead of having your dealer do it.

Fuel rail:lol:

your dealer likely has in-stock all the stuff in emissions delete kit for about $12, because the factory makes and uses those parts in other applications. and your bike should come with a bolt to replace the kickstand auto-retract bolt.

100% correct!

For the couple of items that do work you can get much lower cost elsewhere. I talked with them for about an hour on their magic mod. Mid way he became very defensive and outright unprofessional. All I can say is to stay clear of these people.

Well then,.... . feel silly for even asking about these products. :banghead: I'm glad I reached out to you guys.

Pretty clear that you guys feel the FUEL RAIL is complete snake oil and a cash grab. No wonder he has the comments disabled.

Has anyone done the 90 degree fuel fitting re route or felt a need to?

The fuel line runs upwards and rearwards instead of downwards. This helps prevent things on the trail from grabbing your fuel line.

Here's his cash grab link. I did sound like it might make sense if it was a known issue but again I'm fairly confident that you guys will say that it isn't.

Next steps.

I'm going to call the service department where I'm going to purchase the bike from and inquire if they have a TPS tuner and are able to adjust the throttle position.

Also, going to ask about an emission delete kit.

Lastly, going to also take your advice about the replacing the auto retract on the kickstand.

Thanks a lot you guys!

No need to feel silly! gotta ask...but,
all the stuff from BDS/ktmandhusky site is in the same category!

your service dept definitely has the parts. whether they will install them depends on how much visibility they are willing to tolerate from the Fed/state regulating authorities. To do the install would be basically the same as them reflashing your ECU with a non street-legal map. They are not supposed to do it if they know you are going to use it on the public roadways. HD recently got slammed with a big fine ($15m i think) for stuff they were selling/installing, so the whole industry from the manufacturers to dealers to aftermarket companies are on edge. And based on the hold up on the 17 model street legal KTM/Husky models, it sounds like the heat is on the rise.

Desmogging a 501 is a a pretty easy job, and good way to get familiar with your new scoot, maybe learn a little about how its put together, and save a few $. I understand not everybody has the time, inclination or maybe confidence to DIY a desmog on their new bike, but depending on your locale, and how monitored the dealer may or may not be willing to do it.

The first few steps are the same as getting ready to do a valve check, so when the time comes for that valve check after 1 hour, you'll be pretty much ready!

Your dealer can set the TPS and if a good one knows where and how to do it. Otherwise buy the $49 tool for the ease of use in your garage.

I have yet to rip or even snag the fuel line even after the bike slid down a ravine.

Shouldn't have to tune the TPS on a non s bike should you? Or so I've read. The 90 fuel tank connection is also available direct from husky.

Thank you guys for the information and input. Just wish you all were in BC so we could ride together. Maybe I should expand my ride plans to include more of the USA. Again, thanks so much for caring enough to help me steer clear of the clowns and snake oil. God I hate clowns LOL :D:eek:

It seems like the best mods may be the free ones.. Setting the TPS, cutting holes in the side panel of the air box, swapping for the 2T version of the air filter cage which doesn't have a backfire screen, resulting in more air to the engine. Make sure you use a non flammable air filter and filter oil if you go that route, just to be safe. Um whatelse, I've read that removing one or two screens from the exhaust pipes end cap results in a quieter bike as there isn't all that backpressure (idk specifics as I installed a FMF 4.1 shortly after break-in) but Desmog and mapping are #1 priority for most of us S riders.

Part of BC you in? I'm just next door in AB.

I have had no problems with Dave Simons products! my 2015 FE51S is now absolutely ferocious! i've upgraded my exhaust with his fancy end cap i've added the high flow fuel rail and the grunt exhaust manifold. With stock gearing I'm grabbing third gear clutchless Wheelies anywhere from 35 to 50 miles an hour and running them all the way out to 70 without shifting! Yes I can and do shift while on a wheelie. With the TPS adjustment tool I've adjusted my tps output voltage to about .65 This is with the high flow fuel rail the high flow exhaust end cap and a grunt manifold. Stock my bike would barely do 94 mph and had trouble doing third gear Wheelies without some clutch input. I have seen 108mph with the upgrades and I know it has a bit more! I run out of road around here before I can get her all the way open
