  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

FE/FC Favorite oil?

Hey guys, first post here! So I recently picked up a 15 fe501. I'm coming from the ktm side of things and was wondering what oils you guys like and have had good results with. I've always been loyal to running rotella 15w40 and constantly looks new on every tear down. I have been reading good things about the Mobile 1 0w40 euro formula. I run that in my car but don't really trust anything that thin in my bike, yet.

first post? welcome!
Starting with an oil question? Are you nuts?!

There is a long oil thread in the 4t section dedicated to M1. What I can say is I've been using it in my 2015 501 basically since new. No problems with it. But I haven't torn down the motor yet either, so I'd have to say it falls somewhere between "the best oil ever" and "catastrophically horrible"...I think its about as good as any other more $$$$$ motorcycle specific stuff, but its oil, so there will be 1,000,001 opinions!

After you digest the Mobil 1 info, if you need to kill some more time with another controversial topic, dig into the 4CS threads here and elsewhere. That'll give you reading material until about June!

Have fun on the 501, they are great bikes!

Olive is good for general cooking.

I'm with Reveille on this one! Olive oil has a lower flash point, peanut oil is better, specially for fish frying!

Castor oil is my all time favourite but it doesn't taste as good as it smells....

Stirring the pot...
There have been recent top end failures with FC race bikes running 0W40 Mobil1. Something odd is happening with the oil once it gets hot. It stops going through the spray jet that oils the rockers and cams. All other areas are well oiled including cam chain, and no jet clogs either.

Mobil hasn't published any changes to their formula, but like any manufacturer, they will change percentage of this additive or that one to facilitate maintaining production volume.

Doin my best. Was quite the pick my chin off the ground moment for me. I was like "Whuuuaaatt?" That being said, it works awesome for me.

So just out of curiosity I did a search on the Mobil 1 and came across this. Couldn't find anything on fc race bikes being damaged by Mobil 1, thanks huskynoobee for peeking my OCD, this just seems too thick but what do I know. I remember tinkin saying something about thinner oil equals more flow and better coverage and oiling for tight tolerances. Kelly said he's been running it for years with no issues. Ok ok I'm done lol sticking with Mobil 1. Haven't tried amsoil or royal purple but a buddy of mine told me they used royal purple in their generators in Alaska for major oil companies and seized every one. Switched to Mobil 1 and never had another issueimage.png

My two cents-sense and personal results:
1996 Dodge 4x4 gas motor - 320000 miles with all original drivetrain
2000 BMW M series Z3 - all original drivetrain with 295000 miles
1997 XR400 - 10 years off-road with 2 Baja runs, original motor
2004 KTM450 - 9 years off-road also with two Baja's

All running Mobil 1 - the new 701 will have Mobil 1 in it!

Thanks for the imput guys, I actually found a couple threads of the Fc top end failures a few days ago and now I cant seem to remember where I found them:doh: But I think I decided on Rotella 15w40 as I have always ran. In a few hundred miles we'll know if it was a good choice of not!

this oil thing is truly crazy. what about what the manual recommends? These bikes have been built for a long time. The engineers that design these bikes I would think know the best oil to run in them. I would think that whatever they recommend in the manual should work well. I own a 2015 FE350 with 2600 miles and all I have used is Bel ray 10w50 that they recommend in the manual. I hesitate to go against what the people that design and build these bikes recommend.

0w40 is only thinner than 15w40 when it's cold. Same same at operating temperature. 0w40 will flow better through a cold engine upon start-up.

I discovered today that there is now a 0W40 Rotella available. Has anyone used that? Any comments?

I have ran it in a few VW diesels i've owned over the years. Same oil as the 15w40 just thinner at start up obviously. If you're comfortable with the 0w oils then you should be happy with it. I decided to keep running the 15w40 in my new fe501. couldn't be happier.
