    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Exhaust valve clearances over spec

Hi all,
Did the 1000km valve clearance check on my 2010 TE310. It's the first time I've ever checked valve clearances. The exhaust valves are supposed to be .15 to .20mm. The .203 feeler on my gauge slid in without trouble on both. The next size up on my gauge was something like .215, and it was too big. So the clearance might have been .203 or it might have been .214.

As the valves wear you would expect clearances to get smaller, right? In fact I'm told they usually don't need adjusting at this stage, on this particular engine. Why were my exhaust clearances larger than spec? A husky dealer of good repute told me it can mean my engine is sucking dust! My only crime regarding my filter is using too much oil, can't help myself. Someone else suggested carbon deposits might cause large valve clearances. since I'd never ridden a bike before this one, it took a long time before I started opening the throttle all the way so maybe it does need a broom through it, so to speak.

They may have been incorrectly set at the factory. The clearance does usually get smaller as the valves and seat settle in or wear. From your measurements you are saying you're .01mm too big right? If it's starting ok cold and hot and runs good, I probably wouldn't bother adjusting, just check again in 500km to see if the gaps have changed. I doubt it's carbon deposits after only 1000km.
