    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

exhaust paint. best products?

im looking at spraying my 250 front pipe. as you all know it gets very hot. just would like to know what is the best product on the market for long lasting finish?. im looking at pj1 withstands up to 500f . would this be ok ? maybe it would burn off in time ? any ideas thankyou all:thumbsup:
 
i have seen another. vht caliper paint which withstands up to 900f . i dont really know how hot exhaust will get so i dont know which tempature to go for
 
Painting the exhaust is on my list of things to do. The paint on my XC500 header burned straight off on its first run so I'd say it gets very very hot. Bear in mind it's still hot enough to melt side panels by the time it gets back to the stinger.

I think PJ1 do a fast black paint rated to 816 Celsius. That's what's on my Christmas present wish-list!
 
Actual i've been using regular semi-gloss Rustoleum on all my racing bikes. I start them up & run them for a few mins when i put them back
on the bike,to dry the paint totally.

Then I use Meguiars Natural Shine , sort of a Armour All type spray. This stuff is the greatest stuff since sliced bread, spray it all over the motor, makes it look great & it's not greasy like Armour all & doesn't leave stains when you wash the bike.

My painted pipes easily last a couple of seasons, most needs repainting
from dirt & rocks beat the paint up,then from heat. Maybe it's the Meguiars i don't know,but for my race bikes $4 spray paint sure beats
$10 for the high temp stuff.

VHT header/exhaust paint can withstand 1300 degrees intermitent. If you really wan to keep it nice for a long time you should consider having it aluminized or ceramic coated. The ceramic coating will also keep more of the heat inside the pipe which is potentially good for performance and helps reduce burns.
 
I have all of my pipes ceramic "jet coated".
Ive raced my 83 XC250 for 3 years now and its only now starting to show signs on the head pipe area. About 85% looks new still.
 
I just restored my '71 400 and HT semi gloss was used on the expansion chamber.. I 'seasoned' it ..let engine run & dry etc...
been riding it maybe a couple hours and the paint is getting a dull look, will probably need painting again in a yr or so..

additionally I had my Bultaco alpina exhaust ceramic coated..yes it holds heat in, but its a very thin coating and really not durable for motorcycles...(cars yes) but exposed pipes going thru bramble bushes etc...scratches/damages exhausts

my opinion: The ceramic is more durable but costs more..and when weighing the difference and the frequency refinishing will be needed...
I think paint is preferred..

do you have any pictures of the ceramic coatings ? iam looking into getting mine done. just would like to know the finish. does it have to be polished up after? not too sure of process. thanks
 
I've been using VHT Cylinder paint. Works well, goes on semi-gloss and goes a little more matte after it cooks a bit. Looks factory with the semi flat finish.

Where do you get the VHT in California? WHo carries it?

i've done ceramic/vht/rustoleum bbq paint on various bikes. bang for the buck - the rustoleum works great for 1-2 years. the ceramic lasts a long time but damage is impossible to touch up. if i'm gonna ride it - rustoleum or vht. if it's for restoration (of course not period correct) ceramic coat.
 
I get it from Chaparral in San Berdino. I think they actaully call it VHT Barrel paint. Its got a picture of Triumph barrels on it.
