  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Engine won't turn over (was just running fine - 2010 te250)

I was just out riding my bike. It was running great. After about 5-10 minutes, I started noticing some hiccups and so tried downshifting to regain power. Still was like that then the engine soon just cut out. I quickly get it into neutral and get it stopped. Wait a while, check out to make sure chain is on and everything checks out.

Gas is there. Battery works. It turns on. But when I try to start with button, it just clicks. Oil changed many times. When I checked oil a few days ago it was fine.

Can anyone help what could possibly be wrong? It was de-restricted at around 400 miles.

Thanks

I had a rock break my oil filter cover on my 2010 txc250 and lost all the oil. The piston seized in the cylinder. Could of just replaced the piston and had the cylinder replated but I ended replacing the crank, main bearings, piston and cylinder just to be safe.
If it doesn't turn over its serious.

Ugh. Are these 'special' parts or will any qualified shop be able to fix this? I don't know much about the inner-workings of an engine... What parts should I plan on buying? Thanks again for the help

Parts are easy to get and any good shop can do it. You'll have to get it apart before you will know what to buy.

I may just drop it off to a local shop and have them tear it open and see what I need. Thinking about just getting a 310 kit but realized they don't have one for 2010 models?? Was thinking about the 12 port upgrade as well but then I'd have to get a new exhaust? And I'm not sure if it'd pass inspection, probalby would but don't think it's worth the risk. I have the JD Jetting Tuner EFI and it gives the bike enough power for my skinny a$$ (125lbs)..

It's not hard to do. You'll need a manual though.

The expensive thing is the head...and it's the 1st to go when the oil runs out!

You need to take the tank off and remove the valve cover and take a look.

Is the oil leaking out somewhere?

If it was my bike, the fact that this shop has 'combed through it before' combined with your oil disappearing would concern me.

Yes, you should be checking your oil, but that it is completely gone is bizarre. Unless, of course, that was the effect of the seized engine, rather than the cause of it. You didn't happen to find a big puddle of oil when it stopped running, did you?

That oil was either burned up or leaked out or it is still in the motor.

Take the valve cover off and look. If the head is good then you will be able to fix it.

If not...think $$$$ to fix it.

the oil was black? was it thick or thin? definetly let us know how you make out. i'd be curious to find out where you get your final work done, as I am in New England too, and there aren't a whole lot of places to get parts or service around here.

Once I get the information I'll relay it for help in the future. A loose rock may have knocked the oil filter loose or something. I'm riding in areas where there is a lot of rocks/mud/gravel etc.

Look for damaged areas to your side cases. The aluminum is a bit thin on Most modern bikes IMO. Just my observation- 3 oil changes on 2500 miles? I change my oil 3 times in less than 500 miles. These motors hold very little oil and I think if your waiting for it to get black your waiting way too long. I'm changing mine at every 8-10 hrs run time. The one time I accidentally let it go to 12 hrs I notices a large difference in color and consistency. Anyway I'll hope for the best.

Getting parts is a non-event really ... Halls, BMP, Tasky, all might have the parts in-house and will mail them out to you quickly ... I'm on the the opposite side of the planet, globe, earth, from these guys and get parts in as quick as 5 working days if I'm willing to pay the shipping cost...

Anyone who can tear down any 4-stroke engine should be able to work on these machines ...

On a side note, the handling on this bike is very awesome. I've ridden on a few off road bikes, one was a honda crf 230. And this suspension/handling blows it away! Very fun bike (when it's working ;).

Cheers!

I'm curious, have you pulled the drain plug? If so, how much drained out? Any metal on the magnet? You also never mentioned about looking for signs of impact damage or oil mess. If the oil isn't inside the engine, it must have found a way out. Hopefully there are CH members near you that can help you out or your stick with bringing it to a shop and have them spend the time to investigate.
