  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Engine Maintenance/rebuild

I have an 09 TE310 with 6000 miles (about 190hrs). I know what the book says, but curious what the real world says. Should I be concerned about replacing the piston and or rings? Bike runs fine, but burns a little oil. What has been your experience as far as wear on any of these Husky 4strokes. My 06 Te610 has 19,000 miles and I just replaced the piston and rings even though they weren't out of spec. I know there are lots of variables, but I've spent most of my riding years on 2 strokes.

Perhaps do a proper leak down test? That's a good way to narrow things down. Going by hours alone, you don't have an outrageous amount on it. My 07 TE250 has similar miles on it but over 350 hrs on the original piston/rings. They were checked not long ago and still in spec. Ray Rays 250 TXC has, I believe, over 800 hrs on it, although he may have finally rebuilt it.........

A lot of it depends how you ride it......easy or hard? Are you cruising down roads at 35-40 mph, or ringing it out at 10-11,000 rpm?

Slowpoke has nailed it 100%.
A leak down will give you a reference point. Oil burning is a sign. Note is it smoking or is it oil loss from dropping her on the left side or over filling perhaps.

At about 950, hrs at my last oil change, my drain plug and oil filter had an abundance of metal shavings so something has apparently went belly up in my engine ... I'm hoping a rod kit and mains will fix the issue ... Mine engine never burned any oil and never really showed any issue other than the metal shavings ..

yea i noticed once when i changed the oil in my 2008 txc 250 it had a few metal shavings on the drain plug but last time there weren't

My 2010 310 has >5000km now of all trail riding (sometimes moderate pace, sometimes harder), no racing (no idea on the hours :excuseme: ). The valves are due for a check but overall mine basically feels just as tight as it did when new. No notable loss of power, uses very little oil. On the previous oil change there was some light shavings in the main filter but the in most recent change there was virtually nothing, just a minute amount of black crud and light shavings on the magnet.

If the bike starts easily it typically means the valves are in spec. If there is no noticable oil consumption then I really think 8000 to 10,000 k's is readily achievable given moderate riding and approprate servicing

These are good points here .... Add watching the metal on the plug and filter and you get a good idea on what your engine is doing ...

My bike never used any oil or had any starting issues or felt down on power but after the rebuild, I could tell the power went up ... I don't think I'll go over 500-600 hrs on this piston and ring set this time before I change something out ... Doing this work is more work than a 2t, but not really that big of a deal after the first time ... My biggest issue was the the engine bolts were super tight and hard to get off...

Which variety of abuse has your machine received? E.g. Racing, trail, commuting, moto's etc.?
