• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Electrex World ignitions

There was a discussion about them on Yahoo's husky Group. Everyone seemed to give them good reviews. MZB got good reviews also, PVL poor. I have had bad experience with PVL. Price on Electrex looks attractive.

I am actually sending my Powerdyno, formally MBZ back as the rotor didnt even have a timing mark on it and the case grommet didnt fit properly. They are now made in Chec. Not impressed with the overally quality of the unit as a whole.
Electrex units look well made.
Still waiting to her back from them to see if they have an application for my 1981 430 CR.
Powerdyno unit was sent with the wrong size stator plate,i think it was 80mm and mine is 130 mm.

Electrex are popular here in the UK and are used by some very respected restorers. The have just added an external rotor model to their Husky range, as they only had an internal rotor version previously. I saw one of their systems being demonstrated at the Telford Classic Show and it produced impressive sparks from as low as 150 rpm.

If I ever replace my ignition, it will be this one that I buy.

Thanks Murph,
I am interested in the external rotor model.

Are they on holiday as i have sent them 2 emails with no responce.

Do you know if they made an external complete ignition for a 1981 430 CR ?

I looked into Electrex World ignitions as an option for my 73' CR400 - The kit they offer looks very good and I was impressed with a PDF from the website that shows a complete and inteligent 'how to install' manual.

The cost is not too bad - £195 or $304.00 which is cheaper than the PVL.

I have already had a system rebuilt by Vance Smith - which I am going to run with until I sell the family dog to buy an Electrex kit...

I am interested to hear more.

In the UK we have been on holiday Monday and Tuesday this week, and we have only gone back to work today. I expect you will receive a reply from them very soon.

It is looking highly likely that I will be getting one of these systems sooner than I expected. My Father has just offered to go halves with me on one of the external rotor systems, so I think I will go for it. It is going to cost at least half the price of this system to get my Motoplat repaired, so why bother? I can probably sell the Motoplat on ebay for a few quid even not working properly.

I have just downloaded the instruction leaflet and the rotor is designed for a crank with a smallest taper dimension of 14 mm. It replaces a Motoplat with a mounting plate of 110 mm diameter, although they do mention on their website that if your motor uses a 130 mm mounting plate, then contact them. This implies that they might be able to supply an alternative back plate to suit. I don't know what your 430 uses, but hope this info helps you out.

Thanks Murph,

Let us know how your install goes.

I am not sure what the exact diameter of my stator plate is as i just eyeballed it with a caliper.

I sold my stock motoplat ignition and got 175 US dollars for it without the coil.

Glad to her you blokes are back to work.

Not good news

Slight change of plans. :banghead:

Just been out and measured the taper on my crank and it is 20mm or so at the taper end, so the Electrex rotor will not fit unless it is machined to suit. Not sure if I am altogether happy about doing his, so will give it some thought. It will add to the cost and I am concerned about the rotor not fitting perfectly after being modified (if in fact they can modify it as I haven't asked them yet).

Think I may have to go back to plan A and get the Motoplat tested and repaired if necessary.

I haven't actually ordered a kit, I just looked at the installation instructions on the Electrex website. The kit I would have bought is the external rotor type.

hi, I tryed the internal style on 2 Maicos. not impressed. wiring was too short. Had to mount box on down tube.

Was the rotor a straight fit or did they have to machine it to fit the taper of your crank do you know?

i had to send them my original motorplat internal rotor for them to match up. they machined the taper on the electrex world rotor to the same taper as mine. very good service .

Thanks for that info. I have checked on their website and they are not available until Jan 4th, so I will give them a call next week, and if they can modify their rotor to match my original one then I will be more confident that it will fit properly. If it is free of charge then that is also good news.

I will let you know, thanks.
