    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Im new to this, but does anyone know how to get better econemy from a 09 te450? I have a new programs installed for the efi, however still getting 80kms out of a tank.
 
With ibeat - leanout co1 until it hesitates on snap throttle movements from idle, lean out c02 until you just start to feel the power drop off 20-60% throttle (it is easy to start preignition in this range so don't get too lean) - leave CO3 value for best power 70%-100%.

Mark reference points on your throttle tube at 20% 40% and 70% throttle - that way you have an idea which CO value will have the greatest effect on the range you ride in.

You will notice a sharp rise in header temps as you lean out CO1 - water temps as well. It will not be as "snappy" off idle. The balance is up to you.

Keep a log book so you have your best "economy" tuneup numbers and best "power and response" tuneup numbers.

If you learn to roll the throttle open - it will run pretty lean on CO1 before it starts slowing you down IMO.

Every day I read with interest the efi issues eminating from our bikes. Please note there is hardly ever a carby issue on this site. Reading other bike sites, they do not seem to have nearly the amount of issues we have. I feel we have been passed off lesser quality efi gear. We are also in the third year of efi production. Its not new technology cars and road bikes have been using efi for over 25 years. Gas gas and Sherco have had efi since 2004 and they seem to be good units so what is happening here? I think we are too patient with the results. Worst of all the fuel efficiency does not seem to be improved.
 
had a buddy with a gasgas fe 450- He could only start the bike if it was 65 degrees... and then it ran sometimes when it was up to running temps.

ONe problem is we are all newbies to efi- trying to tune them without the proper tools and knowledge holding our jets to the sky screaming WHY****************************************

I still have faith- the tools are accessable and knowledge can be gained. :thumbsup:

If I was super concerned about sqeezing every mile out of a gallon I'd get the Power Commander and Auto Tune- but I bet that costs more than you'll save in gas. Leaving it in stock mode should get you pretty good gas mileage all in all if that's your priority. Or lean everything out like Mat said.
 
Its not the cost that is concerning its the mileage. 80 to 90 kms of normal riding is too little. I honestly believe that a bike riden in the bush should be capable of 120ks (75 miles) per tank at reasonable pace. The intro of efi with smaller tanks has not really done anything except shorten range.

I agree 80kms seem very little--i dont know what capacity the 09 fuel tank holds. My 2007 450TE can do 175kms on the stock tank. Hard riding -checked it time after time ?
 
Hells bells Blazes thats amazing mileage on one tank. I can squeeze maybe 125/130 K's from a tank. Last hard ride I hit reserve at bang on 105 Ks (63 miles) we got bak to the cars on 125 and had not run out but was pretty close. I do weigh about 260 with all gear on etc so that would have an effect. Its hard for bikes to move prop forwards around.
 
My DRZ got around 50 mpg before I did the DRZ form of the POWER UP, which buy the way was really expensive, then it dropped to around 30 mpg. My TE 450 after POWER UP get around 30 also. It takes fuel and air to make horse power, thats about all there is to it. The more fuel and air you move the more power you can make. With that said what we as bike riders want is quality horse power, that which you can use. The FI system on the TE seems to be able to be adjusted to do just that.
 
I increased my range going from the stock 1.9 gallon tank to the IMS 3.0 gallon tank. that's the real solution... I agree the 1.9 is just not enough to be confident on most of my excursions. There is some economy to be found by tuning- I am sure but not enough to matter significantly- unless you are running terrably rich and subsequently effecting the performance.
 
The much more advanced EFI systems like on the Bergs works wonderful and get great mileage. The FE390 can get 40 MPG on the trail. I believe the new husky 450 will have much more advanced EFI than we have currently.

On my EFI 2010 TXC250 it gets 32 MPG on the trail and runs very well. Very slight hesitation off the bottom some times. I don't miss jets. Love iBeat / quick tuning.
 
To my suprise i got 33 mpg at the Hoots owl 100 netra turkey run last sunday. If you have ibeat and know how to use it, It's much better than carbs.
 
I think you guys are being a little disingenoius around husky efi. I cannot at this stage believe we have really made much of an improvement over the carbs. I think Husky has taken a short cut and put in old tech efi. As stated the Berg and Gas Gas et al all have superior performing efi than the stuff we run. Comments like "if you have ibeat and know how to use it" just dont wash. The level of uncertainty, the cost of parts, the lack or only marginal increase in economy has not been a compelling or resounding success to my mind. Another issue is its inability to fire up with a dead battery. Yes, I am looking forward to the new 450 with hopefully a generational improvement in reliabilty, performance and economy. Please don't get overly defensive on this, just look at the number of issues espoused on this site, there is clearly a lot of issues and concern out there.

on the same token go to thumpertalk and search for JD jetting in the 4 stroke forum and read for days people struggling with carb settings, divider plates, accelerator pump 0-rings, adjustable covers, fancy fuel screws etc. My 08 TXC had over $300 of JD jetting, accelerator pump covers, and fuel adjustment screws to make it work 100%. There are whole companies that thrive of making FCR parts. I love to plug in iBeat ($300 total, cable and SW) and in seconds knowing whats up. read error messages, see historical info etc. Adjusting the "jetting" is super simple and real gains are found there. I will agree that the husky EFI is less sorted and maybe less expensive than the Berg or GasGas but you have to also understand those bikes are thousands more then the huskys as well. I think husky did pretty good wit the EFI and keeping the bikes the same price. I also believe the new 450 will have more advanced and better working EFI as reported on the BMW G450.
