    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

I'm planning a small tour around Scotland on the terra just wondered if I need to take a ltr of oil just in case,

So as any of you done a tour with your terra has it used oil

Thank for any feed back
 
I've done 2 oil changes, both after 3000km and the bike hasn't used any oil. That's running it 30% on trails at varying rpm, the other 70% is on road at open road speeds around 100 - 120kph. I'm confident mine isn't using any. Interested if others are with more than 7000km on their bikes???

I think there are a few on here with more than 25,000km, so they should be the best indicators??
 
Don't worry about taking oil. I've not needed any. My longest tour so far is 3500km & with plenty of km on the TR650 I don't think oil use is an issue.
 
Bought my bike with 3800 miles on it. I found the air filter kinked up and not sealing. Now I have 7500 miles on it and is using about qt per 1000.
 
A quart every 1000 miles? My bike uses none at similar mileage. That's half the total volume every 1000 miles.
 
I'd look inside and pick a mod, any mod. IMHO those that aren't changing the filtering arrangement are missing the boat. It needs good filtration and doesn't have it. Believing that design parameters will take care of cleaning the air (It should but doesn't) isn't going to work in this case. Good luck!
 
I have 12k miles on stock air system use no oil. I have only taken it offroad 2 times so not a lot of sand and always paid attention to it. Doing the 3d printing method shortly. Waiting on glue and uni filter left.
 
The filter mod is a must do for all, but more critical for those of us that get off pavement. I did one dirty ride and previous pics show what happens. Thankfully I made corrections before any real damage occurred. Use 150cc per thousand now.
 
I changed the oil in mine last week at 15,000km. 4000km since the last oil change. The oil level was registering on the bottom 1/4" of the dipstick just over the MIN mark. 1800ml of oil drained out (oil and filter change). The bike shop did the last oil change, so I can't be certain exactly how much they put in, so I don't know if it was just filled slightly low, or if it is using a bit. I refilled it with exactly 2 litres which gives an oil level reading about 2/3 of the way up the stick between MIN and MAX. I'll keep a close eye on it for the next few thousand km and see how it goes. If it is using oil, I guess it's only using 50ml/1000km.
 
You should warm the bike so the oil is more viscous. I don't like to get it hot because removing the crankcase plug burns my delicate little digits when I remove it.

I ran through the recommended oil level check procedure prior to draining the oil. Idle the engine till the fan comes on. idle a few more minutes. Check the level. Drain the oil. Replace the filter. Replace 1.5 litres of oil. Run the engine for 30 seconds. Add another 500ml of oil. Then I took the bike out for about 10 minutes riding. Back home, let it idle till the fan came on, idle a few more minutes. Check the level.

I think on this bike it's particularly important to get the oil nice and hot before draining. There are two oil drain points. The drain for the top oil tank is only 10mm (2/5") wide. The drain for the sump plug is 25mm (1") The majority of the oil is in the tank and must drain through the small drain hole in the tank hose. I wouldn't expect the oil in this engine to get so lumpy that it wouldn't pass through the narrow tank drain when cold, but its' sure going to flow out smoother when it's hot.
