    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Does your TE630 coolant reservoir cap leak after hard dirt riding??

Not really a problem but more just to add to the discussion of the unique foibles of the TE630.....

Does your coolant reservoir cap leak a bit of coolant after a day of beating the bike on dirt?? In other words do you find that a small bit of coolant leaks out of the cap and runs a small amount of coolant along the right side of the bike. I don't ever directly see it running but more just notice it's dried out coolant once the I finish my ride.
 
When the rad burps coolant into the overflow tank the coolant is most likely around boiling. When this happens A small amount of steam exits the coolant tank vent and and leaves deposits on the cap. I think this is what your seeing. Have seen this on many bikes, especially if the tanks are small or @ their high mark. Not limited to the 630. You will have to keep looking!
 
My SMs does it too, I'd call it normal.
Probably more so on the TE, which will spend more time hot on the trails since you're not putting as much air through the radiators as you would at highway speeds.
 
As a side note...
Johngil and I were discussing his traitech upgrade and he was installing an inline 'T' for the temp gauge. Having drained his coolant he found it pretty black. He called me and I started looking at mine and found no coolant in the overflow; thought I had seen some there in the past but never paid much attention. And the coolant level under the cap wasnt' even up to the core. Mine was still clean, but keep an eye on it, consider changing the coolant out to a propylene glycol type. It comes with some kind of blue coolant.

John didn't think the overflow bottle would return to the rad, but since the feed to it comes in at the bottom the rad will suck the overflow back in when it cools and contracts. There is a min/max on the bottle which surprised me. I've never run much coolant in the bottle on a bike. If you top up the rad it will puke some when hot and then return full when it cools.

I have not had any cooling issues with mine, but then I haven't had it in tight trails or traffic during high heat. After running it hard on the road though, it ticks a bit. I know the valve train loosens up with heat. Good way to tell if any of your valves are out of spec, they'll tick pretty good when the motor is hot.
 
check your coolant overflow caps once in a while to ensure they aren't deformed too badly-(seems to happen/ mines is melted) they should seal but allow some air going both ways to adjust for the change in volume as the rad cap releases expanded coolant and draws in when it cools/compresses causing vacume to draw. Also, Rad Caps wear and begin to release at lower presures- which decrases "boiling points" and makes the system seem weaker. Whether you go to a higher bar cap or not- replacing the Rad Cap keeps the system at least as good as it was intended to be.

This year- (spring prep) I'll be getting a new Coolant over flow tank cap (7$ OEM) New Radiator CAP 1.4-1.6 bar (~$20), and will convert to Evan's or Engine Ice. The Engine ICE has one benifit that I see over Evans- you can add water to it if needed on the trail or when you don't have access to special supplies. Evans would be contaminated by adding water. Otherwise, it would be my first choice.

I've gotten over 3000km on my bike and it's still burping coolant whether I've been off road or not.

The bike seems to leak coolant after it has been put down. Always seem to find coolant on strange areas of the motor and shop floor the day after.
 
Leaking coolant from overflow bottle cap.

Is it leaking because it's over heating (boiling out)? or is it a faulty cap? or just over filled?

Fan is working.

Are you topping it up after it cools down?

The dealer tells me it's over heating because of the Safari fuel tank which I have installed. They are saying it is restricting the air flow through the rad.

I am assuming that everyone that has a leaking coolant problem is not running a Safari fuel tank but, is still running the original stock tank?
 
Yeah mine does it, I find coolant all over the side of the bike after a ride, I recently did a tar ride of pretty much straight roads it did it then too. I am running a safari tank now but it did it before too.

Your dealer is talking nonsense. My overflow cap leaks with both the stock tank and a Safari ... at -15C ... on trails with Trellies or frozen lakes with endurance ice racing tires.

I can assure you that the bike is not overheating in these conditions nor does the bike overheat in the summer with the Safari or with the stock tank.

The TE450 and the 510 have reportedly been prone to spewing coolant out of the cap or blowing a hole in the overflow bottle if the coolant level is too low. I think the entire design of the overflow system is a bit weak, especially having the coolant bottle filling port pointed right at one's leg!
 
It's NOT your Safari Tank. My bike is stock and from day 1 it always leaked a little from the cap.

I've come to the conclusion that if you have too much coolant or you have an aggressive, jarring ride it will leak......and that's normal. So far it doesn't seem like anything to worry about but I'm keeping an eye on it.
 
My bike is fitted with a safari tank and will spew a bit of coolant out but it will not draw the coolant back up from the overflow tank, defective radiator cap ?. I was also thinking of putting a fan on the left hand radiator with a simple on of switch so I can turn it on during the slow stuff
 
Mine does it after wheelies or trail riding. I just do not like the fact that if I'm on the road that it could possibly leak out onto the rear wheel, then Look out, we know what happens next.

I remember the day i rode my SMS630 home from the dealer, 22 miles, and when i got home i remember seeing all this dried white stuff all over the right side of my motor all the way down my swingarm. Not knowing what caused this, i wiped it off and went for another ride and once again when i stopped at top of Stunt Rd. in Malibu, there was that white residue everywhere again and this time all over my pants cuff and boot too. LONG STORY SHORT......I've had the bike 3 years now and i can tell you THE ONLY SOLUTION I'VE FOUND IS: Run the damn thing empty and just make sure your radiator is topped off before every ride!! I live in the San Fernando Valley in SoCal and it gets up to 110-115F and I've NEVER had an issue with overheating..... So if you hit the canyons hard like i do, this issue is inevitable!!! HOWEVER, IF ANYONE HAS A SOLUTION TO THIS, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE POST IT HERE****************************************!
 
That white crud is the crappy coolant, and the reason it's going everywhere is because you're filling the radiator up every time you go for a ride.
The extra water that you put in there will just expand, go into the overflow reservoir and not go back into the radiator because of the dodgy filler neck on the stock radiators, and hence comes out and puts that crap coolant residue everywhere.

My advice: change your coolant, flush the cooling system damn well, replace with good 5 year coolant (insert favourite brand here... mine's the red shit that goes into oem VW's etc, made by penrite...) NOT the anything made by castrol (what's in there now). accept that with the stock radiators that it will always be a 'little down' when cold and check your overflow reservoir to make sure it isn't going over the full line (drain it too when you do the cooling system)
