• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Mate I hear what you're saying about the dual sport thing and I really sympathise with you, as I would be pissed to.
It's always amazed me that the TE's are marketed as dual sport bike in the U.S when they clearly aren't.
Here in Australia, and in the U.K they are marketed as enduro bikes maybe that's because we don't get the TXC's who knows, but marketing a TE 449/511 as a dual sport bike is just plain stupid to me.

Ask twenty different people what they want from a dual sport bike and you'll get twenty different answers, different countries want different things from dual sport bikes too, so it's hard to cater for everyone.
Here in Australia a dual sport bike needs to be capable of doing 1000/1200 km a day on the highway with a fuel range of round 400 to 500 km, as its a big place and a long time between fuel stops, and it also needs to be comfortable enough for all day in the saddle, then when you head offroad it needs to handle everything thrown at it fully loaded, that's why I have one of the best ever made a KTM 640 Adventure.

Your 610 would be great here, bar the fuel range.
If you throw enough money at your 511 you could build it into anything you want it to be and good luck with it, but you also have a Awesome dual sport bike already, whatever you choose to do, keep us posted with info and photos of the build
I need to either find a mechanic at halls in Illinois to trick my te610 or in sacramento area....

Sorry for your disappointment- Dual Sport and Adventure Riding means various things to everyone. One thing you can count on is that the bike should have a plate. Over and Over you will hear, husky and ktm "dualsports" are offroad race bikes with plates: detuned and EPA restrictions affecting the costs and challenge to run proper. I spent alot of time making my TE "dualsport" MORE offroad ready for me. My definition of "Offroad" is not the same as the guys in Cali or Florida- going to have different tire, and suspension settings. Just like my 'woods dual sport' set up TE will Blow through the stroke and bottom out on every decent jump- cause its set up for woods not MX.

But please don't ask for Husky dual sport bikes to become more street orientated. They are NOT street bikes.
Bikes that are less dirt orientated: KLR, DR, and yes the Terra are better on road but pigs in my woods. Its one of those things you can't have a bike that does "EVERYTHING" perfect- not in absolute terms.

That said... I am sure you could set up the 511 for anything, you just need to tune, gear, it for it. But Now its like the DRZ guys trying to turn there DRZ's into KTM/ Husky's whereas you are wanting to turn your 511 into a DRZ... in a sense. Take the skid plate off and add a 50 pound plate to the bottom- she'll smooth right out on the freeway. :D

Good luck, I hope you find your solution.
so far my solution is trick the te610 . thank god I didn't sell it......(some guy was on his way to buy from out of state and he bailed at last minute).......im gonna keep the te511 as a piece of art.

I'm OK with that perfect herb and go ahead and toss in some coconuts for drinks ... Both can be plentiful ...

I love the phillipines some great riding their . I went solo around the whole island of Palawan on a Honda xr 250.......what a blast..........the whole island was a moto track......that was 7 years ago......they have some snakes going across the roads their that are 10 ft.long.........

Hard to out perform these offroad!!

He wouldn't be comfortable on the interstate either!! Not sure if he's marketed as a dual sport though! Lmao!!!

I think I have the opposite problem. I have a 610 that is probably too street oriented. I love it on the road, but it is a bit much in the woods. hmm.......wanna trade?
Just that you know , im coming to conclusion that the bike you have has unique and desirable qualitys for SOME out their......a few nuts like me, I wonder if they would be a money pit over time. what im noticing is the older bikes are easier to maintain. the new ones a maintenance nightmare???????? especially for a guy like me who dosnt like to check my oil

I feel a little bit of your pain. I have to ride a main highway for about 1 mile before I can bail and hit a side road to take me to the trail head. That 1 mile is dreadful. I think you can alter your 511 by adding either a 40 or 42 tooth rear sprocket and maybe removing your rim locks and having the tires balanced. This will only cost you about $100 and get you close. If you can spend more, then get the Sahara tires like the Terra has and purchase a new seat from Seat Concepts. BRP probably has some bar risers that would add to comfort as well. Good luck. I hope someone else has something to add. Removing your rim locks will leave a hole in the rim that would have to be addressed somehow.
GETTING CLOSE? I like those words. im a fighter, and im drowning in info. do I bail completely and become a ktm person ( with im guessing a wallet with less money in it) LISTEN, we don't live forever I want the best bike I can get......I know the ktms are better bikes, but are they worth the extra money for a guy like me who doesn't ride that much?

Maybe you should buy a KTM690?
thanks tinken, im investigating this prospect. I understand what you are thinking here.....why not just try to get one bike that does it all...........and you are suggesting the high end choice at the moment for this is the 690....(dont mean to put words in your mouth but I think this is what you are suggesting.....

and I think you are also suggesting that the 690 at basically the same weight as the te610 will beat the crap out of the 610...........AND compete decently with the 511 (although I think the 511 is more nimble in dirt)......im leaning as we speak to keep the te610 , get it tricked .........and keep the 511 as a dirt bike......if they don't overwhelm with maintenance costs???????? and maintenance time???????

why don't you make this your profile pic?
I am stupid. I have seen the pics here on changing oil on new te511 and im still stupid...... what I remember on changing oil on my te610 is i just remove two oil bolts underneath........drain..........clean magnetic oil bolt a bit......remove oil filter......and then replace all bolts............fill with oil........done..............the new te511 oil change looks more complicated. DO I HAVE TO CHANGE THE OIL FILTER EVERY TIME?......seems ridiculous to change the oil on the thing every ten hours.....is this new bike a maintenance nightmare? I know their is a post on this site to remove oil from new te511 , but im still feeling overwhelmed.......

If changing oil overwhelms you, maybe you should take up mountain biking. No wait, you have to oil your chain. Knitting? Seriously, grow a sac. Mobil1 is cheap and filters are 5 bucks. Or you can get stainless filters you wash. Its an easy oil change, Terra owners will confirm this compared to theirs.
