• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Dakar 2012

Sadly one competitor lost his life on the first stage, 1 mile from the end of the special.

from eurosprot:

Argentine rider Jorge Martinez Boero died after crashing on the opening stage of the Dakar Rally on New Year's Day.

Boero, 38, suffered the accident on board his RR 450 Beta motorbike in the sand dunes of the Atlantic seaside city of Necochea in Buenos Aires province.

He was two kilometres from the finish of the 57km special stage held between Necochea and Energia.

"After falling, the rider suffered a heart attack," said race organisers.

"He was treated just five minutes after the accident by race medical staff on board a helicopter, but it was not possible to revive him, and he died after the transfer to the hospital."

It was the second consecutive year he had contested the rally, considered one of the most gruelling of all sporting events.

He quit the 2011 race after a crash on stage six which saw him fall into a precipice and wait eight hours to be rescued.

His father, also Jorge Martinez Boero, was also a racing driver

RIP Jorge.

Speedbrain Report:

Dakar 2012, Stage 1
Mar del Plata – Santa Rosa de la Pampa
763 km in total, 57 km special test

Husqvarna Rallye Team by Speedbrain takes no chances

Avoiding unnecessary risks and finding one´s feet in the race - that has been the motto for the Husqvarna Rallye Team by Speedbrain in the opening stage of the Dakar 2012. The first special test proved to be fast, dusty and littered with holes. Because of the sometimes dangerous conditions it was important to ride cautiously.

The time differences after 57 km were small. Joan Barreda headed the five-man team, placing sixth on the day.
The 28-year-old Spaniard came from 23th position early on. Teammate Paulo Goncalves rode defensively.
"I wanted to avoid any risk and rather warm myself up for the following days," the Portuguese said. This smart approach was also taken by Zé Hélio, Ike Klaumann and Jose Manuel Pellicer, who all completed the inaugural stage not far behind the leaders.

Tomorrow marks the first real endurance test. The riders have to cover a distance of almost 800 km. The special stage alone offers 295 km. The course is expected to be fast at first, then leading through the dunes of El Nihuil and a spectacular volcano area.

1. Francisco Lopez (CHI) Aprilia
2. Marc Coma (SPA) KTM, 0:14 min behind
3. Javier Pizzolito (ARG) Honda, 0:27
6. Joan Barreda (SPA) Husqvarna by Speedbrain, 0:57 16. Paulo Goncalves (POR) Husqvarna by Speedbrain, 1:57 28. Zé Hélio (BRA) Husqvarna by Speedbrain, 3:32 33. Ike Klaumann (BRA) Husqvarna by Speedbrain, 4:56 37. Jose Manuel Pellicer (SPA) Husqvarna by Speedbrain, 5:29

Looks like Barreda was flying today & came in second at the finish, also read that Bill Conger is on a mission today & should have a very good placing.

Go Husky :applause:

  • 19:25 Bikes: Manuel Jamett drops out
  • Husky rider # 70

The biker crashed on the special stage after 206 kilometres and is being looked after by the rally organiser’s teams. He has fractured his toes and has decided to withdraw from the race.

Jonah Street might be out with a mechanical. Guessing #188 Bill Conger is trying to help, they appear to be together on the tracking.

Hope Jonah can stay in it & hope to see more good news about Bill, he was flying earlier.

Rough day for so early in the race. Day 2, Cody has mechanicals after running in top 4, drops 20 min. Jonah Street may be out with stator problems.

Sadly it looks like Jonah is out.

jonah milked his bike off stage to the end of the special (around the dunes) and left his bike with the staff for the sweeper truck to pickup and is getting a ride on some dudes atv back to the bivy.

A word from a fellow Canadian Ted riding with RPA:

James Embro just came by our camp......

"At km 174 Bill slide his bike going threw a gate, his skid plate came off and cracked his case and tank. There was oil and gas spewing out, he tried to use some putty on it but it did want to stick "

That was a long time ago, Bill has been moving since then. I hope he got through the dunes before it got dark. Just for reference he has now been on his bike for 16 hours.

Go Bill

Bad news today. Bill's okay but his race is over.

Message from Ted:

Woke this morning and Bill was asleep in riding gear lying on the ground in front of the support truck. He got a drive back on a truck. His Dakar is over

He is in good spirits and healthy.

Truck is packed, grabbing a quick breakfast and we'll be on our way.
