• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Crankshaft rod compatibility

Four Digit

Husqvarna
AA Class
I have a 1986 Husky 400 xc water pumper and am curious if the crank shaft rod for this motor is compatible with any other size Husky motor or year.

Thanks
Doug Walker

That 400 crankshaft is the same as the 430 (standard shift) of similar era. You should wander around the parts sheets to be sure how far older and newer the part numbers are the same. The rod is probably the same on the 420 auto though I would have to check. 87-88 the rod is more I beam than popsickle stick but I would expect the length and diameter of the two ends are the same. The 500 rod is longer and has a bigger hole at the piston pin. The stroke on the 510 four stroke is similar it might be amusing to see it that is the same as well. The four stroke sheet doesn't break out the rod seperate though.

I edited adding a cut out picture from the 1988 parts sheet where the 250 has a bit longer stroke than in 86 and you can see all the choices and the part number 16 19 902 01 Just get the year you want and look for similar.

Not sure why but this is the second time in close to a week I have answered a post on here and have had pretty much the same thing with a bit more background show up in my inbox from the digest of the yahoo group.

For what it is worth I have seen yamaha in raised letters on a rod in an engine probably something around 86 250.

For the primary kick motors, the rod for the 240,250,400,and 430 are all the same from 82 - 88.

The rod is also the same on some of the earlier 250s and is the same as the 360 and 390 but the crank pin is 52mm long in these cases and not 58mm as on all the primary kick bikes.

We have 15 genuine Husky rods left. They last 25 years in a bike if looked after****************************************

Also, a point worth mentioning, is that once the rod has been removed from the crank cheeks, the replacement should have a 25.03mm diameter crank pin. This is to maintain the tight fit and stop the crank twisting...

Hope this helps! Andy Elliott.

Might I guess the auto (not 500) rods are similar but the kit has a different number due to the pin length.

All the same is subject to some interpretation as I noted in post 2 the 87-88 are a different design and I have a bike with that design in it but a raised elephant logo which I suspect was a replacement part.

I have read{but haven't done it myself}that the connecting rod, bearing, and crankpin from an 83 Yamaha YZ250 can be used in place of 75-81 250,360,390 without the thrust washers.Probably not the quality of OEM or an Eurorod. The hot setup in the Bultaco and Ossa road race/flat tracker camp is to use the connecting rod from an old Yamaha snowmobile, after having the crankwheels machined narrower to accomodate the wider beam at the big end and restore balance.I have never seen one break, even the chinese copies.
