  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Anyone recommend a place (canada preferably) where i can get my crank split and new rod and lower pin / bearing installed and trued?
Its for a 07 SMR 450.

J.P. Morgan

I know you would prefer someone in Canada, but I would highly recommend J.P. Morgan in San Francisco. I just had him rebuild my crank and he did an excellent job. It was a 2-stroke but I believe he would do most any. He is reasonably priced too. If you ask around I'm sure people would agree.

@ the other end of Canada but very well known http://www.cvtech-aab.com/contenu/index_ang.cfm but I'm sure you can find a shop to do it for you in Edmonton like cycles works maybe :excuseme:

:thumbsup:Thats what i found - asked our local race engine builder (Ronin Motorcycle Works) and that is who he sends stuff to.
Seems everyone else in the city arent all that good - they can do, but not with the precision and expertise as i would like.

Did you decide to rebuild your 450 crank rather than find a 510 crank?

For my first engine - already ordered the conrod kit.
The spare engine will get the 510/530 treatment :D

Spare engine? Lol ya gonna swap every other weekend? :D

Build it so it doesnt blow up. Oil Cooler will help immensely, because of the cooling and added capacity. Im going to be making one for my 530 that I'll be using to try my luck at road racing

Thanks for the tips - but what do you mean by

?

Ill be using stock crank and rod, bearings and valves- im thinking a rev limit of 10800 RPM will eventually break things.
Ive got a RAD cushhub to be easier on the tranny, but racing does strain engines.

The high revs are bad on things, but you can do things to help. The exhaust valves are usually what lets go when racing at high revs a lot due to the small stem it has. So Jeff at Halls cycle has an upgraded Titanium exhaust valve. It has a 5.5mm stem instead of 5mm to match the intake stem thats also 5.5mm. Jeff said they have done this with great success. The new Titanium valves (exhaust with larger 5.5mm stem and intake with standard size) are supposed be a better quality than the stock Titanium valves.

Keeping the Oil cool will also help prolong life of the motor. Like I said, use a cooler that will help with temps and add capacity so the oil isnt circulated so often and can stay cooler, longer.

My engine also has a stock crank, bearings, etc.. But once funds are in order and I know for sure i can afford to RR this season, Ill be getting my head ported and prepped for a pair of the Ex valves from Hall's. That will add to the 530 kit, RR model cam, and R/D designs Heavy duty titanium valve springs that are already in. :D

I need to get the cooler done as well. But I have a lot of things going on at the moment

Update - CV Tech AAB - awesome job, and quick too (about 2 week turnaround). The old crankpin was beat to shite!
I would recommend that everyone follow manufacturers specs to replace conrod and pin.
I started bike up yesterday afternoon (first run after rebuild), 2nd kick and off she went. That engine is so quiet now - no ticking, whirring, or clanking.
Thinking i may need a new rad cap, as coolant was tricking out the overflow line (could be normal as everything was filled at +5'C).
