  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Cracked swingarm

pensy

Husqvarna
C Class
I crashed my 08 TXC 510 recently and have cracked my swingarm (and my fibula) along the front pivot just behind the front sprocket. Has anyone ever welded these up or can recommend any procedures that should be followed such as pre heating etc. Have priced new one - not good! Any suggestions appreciated Thanks

Just buy one from a part-out. Should be able to get a good used one for under a $100 on ebay or in the classifieds.

Hi pensy. according to the parts fiches they are the same part number, but in any case I'd advise grabbing a bunch of 4-stroke fiches from http://husqvarnaoutlet.com/parts_fiche as they can be a great help when deciding if parts / accessories from other years will fit. They also give you useful stuff like fastener and bearing sizes. Obviously the bikes changed a lot in '08, but some of the little bits and pieces stay the same over the years...

FWIW I wouldn't even consider getting an ally swingarm welded in a stressed area. As it's unusual to hear of a failure one tends to see a lot of swingarms from parted out bikes for sale. Be prepared to budget for new swingarm bearings though - I've used the AllBalls ones in the past.

Oh, and get well soon mate!

the swing arms were welded to begin with. so welding on it isn't a problem. what is a problem is nobody send's it out to be reheat-treated after welding. if it doesn't get heat treated after, i guarantee it will break, it will shear right next to the new weld. too many welder's just pick a piece of rod at random , not getting the correct alloy. food for thought.... H/T will run more then the welding.....

It's not the incorrect alloy filler rods or the lack of heat treating that is the problem with repair welding this particular swingarm- It's that the repair is needed right beside some machined surfaces- machining that was done after the welds were done originally.
Trying to repair weld this particular swingarm near the pivot will warp, twist or distort the bearing bores and probably cockeye the pivot on that side of the swingarm. Once that happens, it's gonna give you grief for the rest of its service life, even if the welds are sound.

Even if you do some touch up machining, then what? None of the standard bearings etc. will work anymore without sleeves or shims, which creates a whole new round of issues.

That's why I suggested just getting a good one from a part out, this one isn't likely worth attempting to fix.

Also, if this swingarm took a big enough hit to crack it at the pivot, it's likely that it is bent in one way or another.......

Thank guys defiantly something to think about, a new one is $2000 australian dollars and I ve found a second hand one for $600. With all your valid comments have decided to bite the bullet and buy second hand. Thank you all

Sorry about the leg and the swingarm, must have been quite a crash.
Yeah, not sure what your maint schedule is but the linkage and swingarm bearings will most likely be buggered and need replacing.

I think you should look for one outside Oz. Everytime I try to buy something here I feel well and truly shafted price wise, usually at least twice the price of either US or UK including the carriage!

Had MotoXotica sold theirs? It was less than half what you are going to be paying.

I agree....don't reweld that....uness you have a REAL good welder nearby!

That being said.....I did once weld up some chain wear on a WR250 swingarm on top of the bearing bore the new bearings slipped right in and it's been fine since?
