• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

TE/TC Could use an opinion on this cylinder scarring...

I'll disagree with that it couldn't make it to the top of the piston . I've worked on a couple of other left kickers that start with M that the big end rod bearing was coming apart and collapsed the ring groove causing the ring to stick . I'm not saying this is your problem but I've seen it more than once . If you have ANY concerns as to what is happening pull the cylinder and check it out , as far as you already have it apart , why not . Buy the addition gaskets that you need to put it back together .

Right, I realized that after I posted, hence my edit. I've already put it back together and rode it. I may pop the bore scope in there again to see if it got worse. I do think you are right, though, I may just pull it apart for the winter and send it off for plating.

I had a similar mark on my 165 and I think was a minor sieze caused by heat . When I checked the ring end gap it was huge - I put a new ring on it. Id just ride it for another 20 hours and put a new piston and ring in it . If your worried do it now and clean out the bottom end.

Thanks for this post. His scoring is in the same exact spot as mine. I was just about to start ordering top end parts. But after seeing this I'm starting to think I might not want to use a stock piston now. I should probably just wait and see what happens with that guy's attempt at a warranty. Mines a no go as I'm way past the 30 days. But maybe something will come of it, like a newer cylinder/piston combo.

Post a me-too picture with his thread possibly. Maybe KTM/Husky has some minor issue and might see the post.

also, take a mirror and put in one of the ports where the striation is- and see if the ring has scoring or if it was doing the damage. if you can get a view of the piston sidewall/skirt, take a look. (rings are hardest, cylinders are hard, pistons are soft)

you can wait- nothing more is gonna happen to your motor, I'm predicting. And maybe the other guy will get some satisfaction which will give you a path to take.

UPDATE: I contacted my dealer, who contacted Husky on my behalf. Husky says "it's normal for that scoring to be there on these bikes", and that I should just put in a new top end and run it. But they also said that since I can slightly feel the edge of the bigger mark, I should slightly hone it while doing the top end.

Sooo, Husky says it's normal, you should replace the top end and hone it? Sounds like not an answer at all. Great answer, not!

Yea, I'm not happy. I love this bike, but Husky doesn't care about little old me, it seems. If I were a race team manager, I'd probably have a new top end and cylinder in my hot little hands already.
