    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

What are people's take on this bike? Compare it to earlier and later 250's if you have any knowledge-How does it run in the woods, weaknesses, sterngths. What category does it qualify for in AHRMA- EVO?
I think it's a pretty bike. I like the long legged visual cues of that era.
 
well, its the first year of the newer motor, so its engine family runs into the water coolers. some like this chassis better than the 83/84 dual shocks. that year 250 is a fairly broad powerband. the 83-84 air cooled bikes ran harder up top but had less bottom end.
of course its also a great looking bike too.
 
The 82 will put you in AHRMA Post Vintage class ....., First year primary kick, no having hunting up neutral once you stall it on that tricky short creek crossing or like. Last year of the traditionally painted tanks, fairly linear power delivery, great woods bike and looks the part.
 
Are the cylinders of that year interchangeable? Are the strokes and cranks different for each displacement?
 
82 to 84 jugs interchange, just not the 84 CR 250 it is water cooled.
pistons are the same from 74 to 84
 
Owned an 83 HVA 250 WR milk truck that had an 82 motor installed in it. Also owned a stone cold stock 82 HVA 250WR as well. I remember telling everyone I could, just how good that 82 motor was in the woods -- compared to all the other aircooled 250s I've owned. Still feel the same way about that statement today. Wish I'd never sold my 250s.

And frankly, if I had to do this whole vintage thing over I'd on only own 3 bikes -- my 71 Maico 400 GS/MC, an 82 HVA 250WR, and an 82 HVA 430WR. My early 80's aircooled HVAs were (and still are) the most durable bikes I've ever owned. They're as solid as an anvil and are pretty simple to maintain.

Don't know if you have one or are looking to buy one. If you're looking to buy one -- it's a no brainer to me, Eurofreak. Buy it.
 
A goal is AHRMA racing

MX? Cross Country/Woods? If it is mostly for woods/hare scrambles leave the engine as it is, if you want to race MX find a CR/XC cylinder, but unless you are an expert class rider I'd leave the WR cylinder on there even for MX.
 
I would primarily race woods- I'm in western NY. Motocross would be great too. My question relates more to enlarging the displacement on the 250. When I raced my old HVA 85 250 years ago it was anemic down low and decent mid/top end.
With one ride on my 86 WR 400 I found the bottom end I was missing with the 250. I wondered if I could install a 400 or 420 top end on it.
I'm thinking about buying one.I grew up on two shocks and it would be interesting to add to the progression of off road bikes.
'74 Rickman 125, 86 HVA - easily modified for the woodsWR400, 07 KTM 300EXC so far. This slot could also be filled with a CZ motocrosser ;)

to turn the 250 into a 430 you need everything. the transmissions swap but are different.
the rods are the same, but the cranks are different to achieve different strokes. jugs of course are different and so are the cases. 250 cases can be modified into big bore cases but its a shame to do that. the only swede 250 ive rode that has some bottom is the 87/88 "stroker" 250. all the others are a bit soft on bottom.
 
Thanks Justintendo. It was just a thought, don't know a lot about this era Husky. Are there many AHRMA races in PA? I used to run a bunch of enduros down there- Rattlesnake, Broad Mountain, etc. Bottone's Jo bet cycles was my dealer in Bradford PA for years- Husky and KTM
 
there are some ahrma races around Binghamton. Cortland, hancock. Unadilla has a big vintage race in June. Below Binghamton in PA have some too.
