    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

FE/FC Coming from TXC310R, which Husky (KTM based) would be best for me?

Thanks for all the replies guys! I was definitely riding below my level in that race (not making excuses) so I would not tire out on the last couple laps. It is a long race and my fitness is just average, so I usually just try for steady pace, consistency and focus on finishing. Been getting better and better at the fitness portion as each weekend passes.

If the bike were reliable it would be my end all bike, but it has been trouble since the day I bought it. It is actually back at the dealer now for a strange stalling issue. In the meantime I had a chance to ride a 2009 KTM 450 and it felt heavy, turned horrible, and had lots of head shake. Power didn't feel much different than my 310 with exhaust, race map and race fuel, except for more bottom torque. Damn thing just felt so heavy and I got tired very fast.

I have a YZ250 2 stroke with flywheel and it is still a monster on the trail. I get arm pump very quickly and the explosive power is great for about 30 minutes, then I start getting worn out. Went with 4 stroke for the smooth power delivery. I am 42, and with the 310 I can just ride for hours and hours, which makes me faster in the long haul. My fear with a 300 2 stroke is that it will just burn me out very quickly.

So this is why I am looking at the 350. I am surprised to hear the 350 has less bottom than the 310, and I have heard that before. That is disappointing because I thought the 310 lacked bottom end. We'll I will wait to see what the issue is with the 310 and go from there. New 2015's don't come in till mid September, so I have some time to think about it.
 
I went from a 310 to a FE501 and can ride all day without getting tired. It feels every bit as easy to ride as my 2012 310 was. I even did a 265 mile day of all off road. it was ATV trails that were 3-4 gear most of the time. When riding in the tight woods the engine will run hot from my experience but will do everything you ask of it. Tons of torque off the bottom so it makes it easier to ride the technical stuff in my experience.
 
Comparing an 09 to one of the newer 450's is probably a bad idea. I bet the new ones handle extremely well. Sure they'll feel a little heavier but I think you'd be surprised. I have quite a bit of time on a TC449, 310's, and of course my 250. I don't think you give up to much handling but gain so much torque that it's easier to ride. If anything is be concerned that a 450 would make me lazy because it's just so much easier to go quick on. The TC449 is a really smooth motor. Not a major hit but it doesn't stop pulling. I'm sure the FE501's are even easier to ride.

You also mentioned a 300 2 stroke. Those things have so many ways to tune them, I can't say I'd be concerned. Seems like it would be a whole different experience from your YZ with a flywheel weight.

It seems your not excited about the 350 but there are a ton of options :). The problem is only having one bike lol
 
I agree with above statements KTM350 engine is softer off the bottom less torque down low than the blackhead as well as the redhead 310s, in my experience with 2 different 350XCFs and a quick ride on a FE350, and 2011-2013 on X-lites. The FE felt a little more "enduro" like in power but still liked the rev. Both of my X-Lites had/have more good usable enduro power than they seem posible to have coming from that little powerplant.

The310 it is a brliliant package that needed further devel for us 99%ers. at the customer lever ZipTy Racing has all the goods for these X-lite machines and can get you very dialed in for longterm use and reliability.
A stalling issue? can be many things, but fuel system is where they should look, ECU map, fuel pump, fuel filter, INJECTOR (clog).
 
PS guys apples and oranges,, he asked about going from 310.....thats a mid sized 4 stroke for tight enduro use...the FE350 is in fact the best Husky brand comparo and step up, the 350- 400 Beta may be a direct comp choice as well.
But IMHO not so humble in this case----the Sherco SE300i race is truly the next gen and upgraded 300cc pure enduro bike. It is what the TXC310R should have developed into. Within seconds after climbing on that bike from my well dialed TXC310R I was comfortable and that bike was railing with no effort. Very well though out designed pure enduro machine, and best in mid sized 300cc class 4 stroke for me.

KTMs are garbage. I rode with three of them yesterday and none of them could keep up with a $900 craigslist special 02 CR250 husky. WTF? I thought it was all about the new tech. One was even a 6 days decked out 300. The only one that could keep up was a 2012 CR125 husky. :D Also we climbed some huge hills, 2 KTMs were spewing coolant all over the hillside. 2 huskys were not even percolating. I think I might have sold them on some zipty waterless coolant.

I joke, they are all good bikes. The KTMs do tend to run very hot though.

That guy has been making all of us look good for years.:) I'm sure he rode all the new bikes and chose the fe350. It's funny because with the old Husky's he said he was waiting on a new 450 and now that he has one he picked the 350. Really can't go wrong with any of them but when your spending big money, hopefully it's perfect for you. KTM does test ride days, I'd try to find one near you and then it'll be easier to decide

for the 310R a couple mods can add to the less high CG, a lightweight battery, and lighter shorter muffler for example. The Earth-X for me could really be felt in turn transitions over the OEM Yuasa lead acid boat anchor.
 
I rode my fe350 back to back with several bikes one was a kx450f which is a tank compared to the 350. I'm still dialing the 350 in but you'll be hard pressed to find a better turning bike than the x-light chassis.
I've had to do full FMF exhaust, fuel remap, ignition map switch, zip-ty coolant and the biggest difference was going from a 52t rear to a 53t sprocket. After doing all this the 350 has plenty of power (coming off a wr300 and cr165) and plenty of torque.
If your not set on a four stroke get the 300 if your set on a four stroke get the fe350 or wait for the fc350 or go beta 350. This just an opinion but all bikes have issues that the owner wants to make better or change. I know I can't buy a bike off the floor and not change anything lol. This 350 wants to be revved and that is where the power is, with my 300 I'd ride a gear low with the 350 I ride a gear high just takes getting used to. I'm no faster on my 8k+ bike than I was on my 5k Italian bike but the new suspension sure is nice! Just my 2cents...
 
We have a 2014 Sherco 300i race along with a Beta 350. The Sherco is a much better all around race and trail bike. The only place the Beta is better is low end torque and DS/road transmission. This is not saying the Sherco can't lug down low because it can but not like the Beta. Sherco's power stock is softer than a race 2013 TXC310 but the power delivery is smoother and more endure like, rode back to back. Sherco also feels much more lighter then both Beta 350 and the TXC310 even tho it's only about 10lbs lighter than the TXC. The power down low on the Sherco feels the same as the 350xc-w but falls short when on very top. Again like the TXC, Sherco's power is much more endure like compared to the KTM. My Beta motor went down wayyyy to early in it's life and now looking for another bike. FE350 or another Sherco either the new 450 or a 300i is on the horizon.
 
If I was you id get the FC350. I just bought a new 350sxf and am in love with this thing. It does everything perfectly, from engine to suspension its flat out amazing. Ive tried 450's, 250's (both 2 and 4 stroke), and my old 310 husky and my new 350 feels better then all of those bikes, no questions asked. I honestly thought I would loose some bottom end going to the 350 over the 310 but figured id gain it back on top end, but I was wrong, the 350 has more EVERYWHERE. Mush stronger engine then my 310, and much better suspension (once the correct spring rates are in the bike). I couldn't believe how much I liked the ktm suspension considering everyone seems to complain about it, but it was better then my reworked husky suspension but leaps and bounds. All I did was add the right springs into the bike for my weight and everything has worked great since.
