Tooling around with a Hiflow paper filter on my desk, I noticed a small disk magnet would fit in the recessed end of the filter. The drain plug comes with a small magnet attached to the end of it, but oil must randomly flow past it for it to collect the debris. All oil passes by the paper filter before it goes into the engine, so I decided to see if a much stronger magnet would pick up the very fine metallic particles which made it past the first two filters. Since the particles which cause wear in our engines are small enough to pass straight through paper filters, I figured an additional step of protection couldn’t hurt.
I ordered several sizes and thicknesses through K&J Magnetics
and found that the 5/8” x 3/16” Neodymium disc magnet ($1.96) was a perfect fit. This magnet has a 12.74lb pull force compared to the drain plug magnet which has a 2lb pull.
