  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Clutch whine while Engaged and under load??? (sound clip included)

I couldnt resist throwing the TC drive gear back on to see if that was indeed my issue. SUCCESS! Purrs like a kitten. I cannot believe how much quieter it is now! I cant believe I never checked that before. I was so caught up with it being the clutch or the transmission I never even thought about the Electric starter components.

Well the plot thickens once again.....

As I stated above the bike ran fine with the electric start components out and the spare drive sprocket that I had. So I order the missing bearing from halls thinking I am set. I get the bearing friday and install everything very carefully making sure I did it right this time, and had all the parts.
Start the motor, and the damn noise is still there! I verify that the freewheel is working correctly so its not the starter, starter clutch, or any of those components. So the only thing left that was different is the drive sprocket. I compare the the TC drive sprocket to the one I have that has the bearing for the free wheel. Then I notice it, the one I was using only has 20 teeth, when it should have 23. The 20 tooth sprocket is for the 250, not the 450. And the clutch housings are matched to the drive sprocket. So that means that there is some serious play between the two sprockets.
That has to be it, its the only thing left.
Now the question is can I just swap the bearing out and put it on the 23 tooth drive sprocket? Or do I need to find one for a 450 with electric start. It seems like there is just a clip holding the bearing in. I ran out of time and did not get a chance to pull it back off.
I dont see any distinction between the sprockets for different model 450's. So fingers cross, I can hopefully swap it out.

I am going to get this damn noise if its the last thing I do! It was so nice to ride the bike nice and quiet.

Lesson learned, dont buy used parts from ebay if you are not POSITIVE they are correct. Never take a ebayer's word for it!

ok its now official! The noise is gone. It was the damn sprocket all along. Luckily the cup that the drive sprockets are mounted on are the same. The one way bearing is held in by a clip and comes right out. Swapped the bearing and reinstalled the correct sprocket.
So hopefully this saga has ended, thanks to all who helped out. I appreciate your efforts.
Jay
