• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Clutch issue - me too

Hi,
I'm totally at the mercy of the technicians now. The guy my Husky is at says it needs a new clucth basket, but I'm not sure any more.
The clutch bites when pulling away in 1st gear - it shudders, and looks to bystanders as if I cant ride a bike. I have to pull in the clutch, and then let go again, pull it in again, and let go again. Eventually it lets me pull away. Very frustrating.

What can the problem be?

We are being ripped off here in South Africa. A second hand clutch basket at the local importer (Italmoto) costs R4500($562.50) after their "best" discount. A new one costs about R1000 ($125) on top - thus $750.00.

I'll have to ask one of our local experts on Huskies to go have a look. Aaaargh!!! What a drag.

As has been said before, you can smooth out the fingers of the clutch basket where the plates have worn into them if it's not too bad. If you're careful, it should smooth out the feel and last a lot longer. Mine's had a little shudder/bite in first since it was almost new but it hasn't gotten worse in ~7000 miles...

Thanks RDTCU,
Do you just lightly file them?
Is there perhaps a thread about it, or a link?

Thanks,
Hennie

Yes, from what I've seen, file and sandpaper, just smoothing out the notches. If they're very deep, you can't remove them entirely, but you can smooth out the steps so it won't hang up as badly. Can't point to an exact thread at the moment...

Its a normal thing to do to a clutch basket. Use a fine file and smooth the steps flat. You have nothing to lose other than the clutch basket will wear a little bit faster (but not much) next time due to the additional play. It's just a clutch. After it is really worn you could probably get someone to build up the edge with a welder and do some careful filing and measuring to bring it back to stock. Beats paying $750. For a purchased replacement I would suggest a hinson (if they make them). An old trick is to preload the springs with a washer to give the clutch better ability to release over any roughness. Will increase the clutch pull a bit but they are pretty easy to start with. Cam.

Thanks for all the advice.
The mechanic filed down the "wings" on the basket, and voila - its like having a new clutch.
The whole excercise cost me $250 in labour. Very relieved and happy.

Once again, thanks everyone.

Luister Hennie - You must get on the SA Wild Dogs website under Husky owners thread ... lots of brain trust there (and some of us are here too, including Blazes that is THE SA Husky guru). While the filing is a present fix guaranteed you need to do the spring washers as well. Where are you based and who is working on the bike?
