Cleaner W-D replacement

I thought I would post here, figured 'old bolts'...LOL

Machinist's actually tested penetrates for break out torque on rusted nuts. Significant results!

They arranged a subjective test of all the popular penetrates with the control being the torque required to remove the nut from a "scientifically rusted" environment.

None ..................... 516 pounds
WD-40 .................. 238 pounds
PB Blaster ............. 214 pounds
Liquid Wrench ..... 127 pounds
Kano Kroil ............ 106 pounds
ATF-Acetone mix....53 pounds

The ATF-Acetone mix was a "home brew" mix of 50 - 50 automatic transmission fluid and acetone. Note the "home brew" was better than any commercial product in this one particular test. Our local machinist group mixed up a batch and we all now use it with equally good results. Note also that "Liquid Wrench" is about as good as "Kroil" for about 20%of the price.

The only thing I use WD-40 for is lube for changing tires, works great for that. Also used for a "detail" to make the bike look better.

I think that I have read this somewhere before, maybe even somewhere on the CH forum. Anyway, I'll be sure to remember it next time I have a stuck bolt or nut.

Great info. I have liquid wrench in the shop but the acetone/ATF combo is easy and cheap and I will try it. WD40 for all the same as Husq fleet and more. Cleaning parts, spooge, keeping the o-rings soft on the chain when storing the bike, etc.

I love WD 40. The best use I have for it is to walk behind the line of my opponents on race day and spray their rear rotors. I then put it back in fanny pack. Has led to great results for me.

I love WD-40 for removing tar, stickers, chain lube, etc, from stuff. If I need something unstuck, I use Kano Kroil. It's expensive, but you don't need much. It's good on guns, too.

as a gunsmith by trade....WD-40 is not a good lube for guns, it will dry out fast..
however, it is great for spraying downa wet gun, or frosty gun. i will use it in the summer so that they dont rust from moisture from the swamp cooler.
plain ol Rem oil, or 3 in 1 oil works best for lube on weapons.
Kano Labs Kroil is the best all around lube, for guns....however it aint cheap.
but any oil, is better then no oil....in a pinch..ATF works well, keeps water off, and wont hurt wood, plastic or rubber.
