  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Changing a plug

...you think these plugs are hard to get at,try getting out some of the Yamaha/Honda ATV'S...you'll be cussin' in no time.......

I'd really like to meet the guy face to face that is responsible for this POS work and just ask him why? What is the purpose of making a simple task that has been done since before Henry Ford's days such a PITA ...

And I would ask him this same question over and over and over till he admitted the truth.... And yes, it might takes days before I get the truth out of him but I have nothing better to do ...

In the world of software development this would be called a regression ... You have broken something that has previously worked in the last build ... Everyone involved in a development cycle hates regressions ... And yes, getting a special tool allows the problem to be 'worked around' and the day is saved ...

Socket catches the inner radius of the circular gasket that seals the valve cover at the plug recess. I used a Honda crf50's OEM plug socket. Still had to apply a little pressure to squeeze it past the gasket. Would not be fun on the trail as access to that area is tight unless tank is off.

All is well that ends well ....

Apparently the rubber seal used to keep dirt /water /grit AND ENGINE Oil from the plug was my issue... I'm continuing to work on this bike and discovered this 'seal' issue after I had the valve cover off again ...

Yeah, that thing will fall off and it's very easy to miss. Happened to me as well, I felt something hit my shoe.

While you're at it would you dig up Franz Xavier Reimspiess (designer 0f the VW flat-four) and ask him why I have to change socket extensions for every spark plug? It's almost easier to pull the whole engine to change them.

These guys are engineers.. Probably have 1-3 master degrees .. they get payed the big bucks to come up with new ideas ... As long as you have a work-around, its probably deemed OK to be designed that way ... worked for BillG big-time ...

Even with the thin-walled plug socket i have I still spray a little WD on the outside to help with getting it past that seal. If it keeps the water out (I have yet to submerge my engine) I can deal with it.
